In “Extra large, Please,” Alice M. Davies focuses on the increase of obesity with children, which schools are provoking. There are many various social problems in kids of America today ranging from poverty to drug abuse. One alarming factor that is rapidly exploding is childhood obesity. Alice Davies’ article, “‘Extra Large,’ Please,” which describe the alarming social problem of childhood obesity connected to the fast food industry in America today. Davies stated: “the number of American kids who are dangerously overweight has tripled. More than 16 percent of our children qualify as ‘obese’” (Davies). Although childhood obesity is a growing problem stemming from a terrible diet and lack of exercise, we can take action now to avoid further detriment towards their future health. The first cause of childhood obesity is the lack of inactivity. Many schools are not required to have any physical education. Unfortunately, Davies’ states: “Many of those schools are so short of money they’ve scrapped physical-fitness classes” and “too few communities have athletic programs in place.” It is terrible that schools have a hand in this growing epidemic. Also, Spurlock’s Supersize Me documentary shows that “schools are cutting out recess to study for testing and only one state requires physical-fitness classes.” It is terrible that most of these children taking exams are obese. In addition, they live in a dangerous neighborhood where they can’t go out and play because drug activity and violent crime may make playing outside dangerous. Communities should take part in making the neighborhood a safe haven for kids to play outside. The second cause of childhood obesity is poor eating habits. Children will rather eat candy instead of focusing on the products that are good for the body. Parents play a major role when it comes to allowing or giving their child food that will damage the body more less providing nutrients. Children need to leave the junk food behind…
Cell phones are not just a privilege in people’s lives anymore but have become a necessity in order for people to function on a daily basis. Not a minute goes by where cell phones aren’t being used somewhere at some time. The average American looks at their phone 150 times per day. That works out to once every 6.5 minutes of every hour that the average person is awake. (Glaser) As high as those numbers are, the usage of cell phones will only continue to increase as time goes on. Cell phones have their advantages but the amount of time people spend on their cellphones is ruining face to face communication, jeopardizing jobs in the future, and putting people’s lives at a higher risk.…
Have you ever wondered why you can’t focus in class or why you didn’t score high on your Algebra exam? Well, my answer to that is because cell phones are distracting them from concentrating in elementary school, middle school, high school and even college. For instance, there are teenagers that text during class and that is not the right thing to do if the student wants to learn. For that reason, a lot of students do a horrible job in school because they get addicted at texting and using social networking sites or playing online games in the Internet. Teenagers should use their brains and realize that their education comes first before anything and they shouldn’t let technology distract them from reaching their goal. Phones are useful but teenagers shouldn’t use them as if their lives depended on them especially in school.…
Cell phones have changed the way people socially interact with each other. Nowadays, anyone anywhere can just pick up their cell phone and call each other at any time of the day or night. (Stewart 1). In the past when there were just house phones around, people could use the excuse “Sorry I wasn’t home to answer your call” but now, with the emerging of cell phones, people will get a hold of you somehow. Cell phones are considered to be your own personal property while house phones are considered to be used for the family. Cell phones depend on satellite and signal, which means anyone, can take their cell phones anywhere they choose, while house phones depend on the wires in the house which limits anyone from using it outside of the house. (Stewart 1). For example, someone could be on their house phone and their little brother could be eavesdropping on the conversation. No one would want that, would they? On the other hand, cell phones are more personal and most of them have Wi-Fi which leads them to be connected to the internet. Now people are more socially involved on the web through Facebook, Twitter, Instant Messaging, etc. However, cell phones have both a positive and negative effect on people.…

There has have been many researches and court cases on how cell phones are dangerous and what kind of damage it they can do to people. There was a case on a man who blamed cell phones in the hospital that had died from a brain tumor. That person blamed the death of their family member on cell phones because the cell phone was right beside where the brain tumor was. Scientists were investigating on how can the cell phone can cause brain tumors and other serious diseases. Some scientists say that cell phones are giving off radiation when talking on the phone. Cell phones are like microwaves because the cell phone’s using radiation to send and receive the text messages and calls. Many people press the cell phone up against their ear so they can hear the person they are talking to. Cell Phones phones do produce a lot of heat and it produces microwaves, which it uses radiation just like the microwave that people use to cook food. Cell Phones phones are also dangerous to use when driving down the highway because the cell phones can still receive messages and calls. Cell Phone phone radiation was studied by different scientists on how it caused brain cancer on many patients. Students use the cell phones to cheat on tests and quizzes. It significantly affects the change of education standards to the students who have cell phones because it’s easier for the students to find the correct answer on the internet.…

Despite all that, have you ever considered dangers of using cell phones or thought about the harmful effects of the microwave radiations? We are starting to get used to people seemingly talking to themselves everywhere. The benefits of cell phones are undoubtedly numerous; especially in emergency situations. However; technology that improves convenience, often has a destructive side, and Cell phones are no exception.…
Negative Effects of Cell Phones on Society's Social Lives | Negative Effects of Cell Phones on Society…
Cell phones has affected the way we socialize these days; if you notice people are starting to text their friends and family instead if actually speaking verbally. You go out to dinner and look around and see people out with family but there is no conversations going on at the table mostly just huh… yeah… mmhm.., because they are busy texting someone not there on their phones. I feel human communicant is slowly disappearing among friends and family. You even see parent’s texting their kids when in the same house to discuss something with them. People in relationships hold everything in until they are able to text it to their other half. Our communication between each other is depending on a little electronic device. People use cell phones in public places, and during church. I have even seen ten-year olds walking across the street texting their friends instead of paying attention to the cars.…
As time passed and society grew larger and larger, so did the way we communicate to each other. We went from face to face interaction, to handwritten letters, to typed letters, to phone calls, to email. Now in the twenty-first century most of society has cell phones. With cell phones they have two different functions. One is to call and actually talk and the other one is to type what you want to say and send it to another person who also has a cell phone and receive it as a text. As the years pass younger and younger children start to get there first cell phone. When someone gets a cell phone at any age may be susceptible to cancer, when it comes time to start driving become a hazard, and have a lack of social skills.…
There are billions of people all over the world use cell phones. They use them for many different purposes, some use them for calling, or sending messages, others use may use them for logging into the net and chatting with friends. From my point of view, cell phones are very dangerous as they waste time and money, sometimes they lead to some sort of addiction, and they are dangerous to the human body.…
The effects of cell phones on society will always be a double edged sword. The debate is never ending. Both sides have compelling arguments. But although there are some disadvantages, when looking around, one of the first sights I see are people walking with one hand up to their ear, like an evidence that cell phones have become important in our daily life.…
A lot of people today believe that cell phones are dangerous. It’s all about how you use your cell phone that makes them dangerous. They do not cause health concerns, car accidents, and addiction. You yourself is what causes these problems by the way you use your cell phone in everyday life.…
I totally agree that cell phones are big distraction to the learning process. Students use their cell phones to check their emails and chat messenger while the teacher is not aware. It also wastes teacher’s time of instructing the lesson and classmate’s time of learning. Studies have shown that cell phones can be health hazard. Constant exposure to the radiation emitted by cell phone in a closed room may be bad for students.…
