Assignment 1
For this assignment I have chosen these three companies:
1st 4 film;
Lyons entertainment;
MTV.

I chose them, because these are three different companies with different tasks, they are international and these companies work in the work field of television.

1st 4 film
1st 4 film is a British business focussed on providing TV camera crews in Britain and abroad.

They mainly work for these channels:
BBC;
ITV;
Channel 4;
Sky Sports.

1st 4 film is part of ONfilm group, which offers a variety of video production through various websites. ONfilm group was founded in 2000 by David Varley. In 2010, he decided to employ his own in house development team to not only improve his web presence, but incorporate new technology for their customers. They now have a host of talent under their roof at their offices in Leeds. The teams really at the cutting edge, and they’re starting to build new websites, and Web TV for business' far and wide.
They have a specialist property video team now, and they're regularly working for the Nations builders and estate agents, shooting promo videos, show homes, locations and testimonials.
Their motive is basically: were not just interested in the film we make for you, but more importantly we want it to make a difference for your business.
They have worked for itv.com, BBC, Sky sport, CNN, Sky News, Discovery Channel and Panorama. All formats are offered, Z1, DV Cam, Digibeta, EX3 & Nano, HD Cam & P2.
They say: ‘’Our portfolio is our reputation…’’ (1st4film. N.d.).
I think their reputation is high, because they have worked with internationals. But not only that. They have also won Three Time Royal Television Society awards and two RTS awards for two programs, which are: * BBC Northern Ireland "We're Not Brazil, we're Northern Ireland"
RTS Award winner 2006.; * BBC Wales "Gloves Off"
RTS Awards 2005.
This gives the idea that this company is a good company, which offers what they promise.
They have also got compliments from internationals. Here are some:
‘’Brilliant team, memorable film, produced onto DVD in only 3 days, use them!’’ (Leads Building Society, n.d.)

‘’Refreshing, inspiring and utterly professional.’’ (Lt. Col. Simon Powell, n.d.)
‘’Our web hits have tripled since launching HDTV’’ (1st4film, n.d.)
So not only criticism from international shows that 1st 4 film is a good organization, which offers good production, but also their web hits have been increasing since they are innovating. This shows that they don’t just offer what they have, but also innovate to give more than what they have.

Lyons entertainment

Lyons Entertainment, now Bishop-Lyons Entertainment (BLE), has been creating, developing and producing original programming for the TV and film industry since 2002. President and executive producer, David Lyons has won over 30 international awards including 4 Platinum EMPixx awards, 4 Auroras, 3 Tellys and a Remi amongst others, for directing, producing and writing and has partnered with some of entertainment's top executives and producers.

BLE is one of the industry leaders in production of TV sizzle reels and development of original programming. The company is represented by one of reality TV’s most prominent agencies, Rebel Entertainment Partners, who launched the major hit show Judge Judy.
President David Lyons has won over 30 international awards for directing, producing and writing and has partnered with some of entertainment's top executives and producers to create a visionary production company. Included in his long list of partners are Isaac Bolden, producer of hit shows such as Miami Ink, LA Ink and The Rachel Zoe Project; Pink Sneakers Productions, producers of the hit shows Hogan Knows Best and MTV Cribs; Emmy Award winning director Lane Bishop; and many others (Bishop-Lyons Entertainment, n.d.).
Bruce Robertson, senior VP of creative strategy for ITV Studios America, said: “Bishop-Lyons Entertainment is a fantastic fit for ITV Studios America as we continue to expand our ever-growing and diverse development portfolio (Robertson, 2013).
As you can see, this is not just a production company. It has got more awards for producing. And, that it’s good isn’t just shown by the awards, but the company is also complimented by the ITV Studios America, a bigger international TV production company.

MTV

MTV, originally an initialism of Music Television, is an American cable television channel based in New York City, New York that launched on Saturday, August 1, 1981. The original purpose of the channel was to play music videos guided by Benjamin Wicker accompanied by Chittum and Bolt known as VJs. In its early years MTV's main target demographic were young adults but today, MTV primarily broadcasts are targeted at adolescents and teenagers.
The original purpose of MTV was to be "Music Television", playing music videos 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, guided by on-air personalities known as VJs (video jockeys). The original taglines of the channel were "You'll never look at music the same way again," and "On cable. In stereo." Although the original MTV channel no longer plays music videos 24/7, several of its spin-off channels do so, including MTV Hits and MTV Jams. In addition, viewers can play music videos on-demand at MTV.com. MTV continues to support a broad selection of music videos on its international channels as well.

Now-a-days MTV brings more reality shows and animated shows with social issues, political correctness, sensitivity, censorship as content. Their programs are mainly focused on young people aged 12 to 18, but they have perceived negative social influence on young people. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
MTV has changed a lot since they started in 1981. MTV started as a music video broadcaster. During the up-coming years the channel has decreased their video clips and increased soaps, game shows and dating shows. This had as result that the viewer’s rate has decreased, especially in Europe and the USA (Van Bemmel, 1996).
MTV noticed this decrease, so they have innovated. They also use the internet as a source to get to their target group, youngsters. They also have worked with a HI, a Dutch telecom company, to launch MTV mobile in the Netherlands. They did it to reach their target group better. Though, they still broadcast a lot of other programs, other than music and video clips (Hartvelt, 2010).
Even though MTV has changed over the last years and their viewer’s rate has decreased, they still innovate to reach their target group. I think that MTV won’t totally change their concept: music, but they will keep more attention by showing more than just music, to be as attractive as possible for their target group’s interest. They will also find more ways to do so.
MTV’s main role is to bring video clips to youths.
MTV Networks upholds its social responsibility with acclaimed pro-social campaigns such as Choose or Lose, Fight For Your Rights, MTV’s Exit Campaign, Staying Alive and Think.

Assignment 2
For this assignment I have chosen the TV genre ‘Sitcoms’, because I like to sitcoms shows and I’d like to do some more research about it. Sitcoms had there been since the a long time, so I could find some information about it.

1950-1970: I love Lucy
The first product will be the TV show called ‘I love Lucy’, which was aired between 1951 and 1957. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
‘I love Lucy’ was a sitcom about a daffy woman constantly strives to become a star along with her bandleader husband and gets herself in the strangest situations.
The sitcom I Love Lucy filmed in the 1950’s portrayed the simplicity and modestly of life during that time period of television.
One of the biggest controversies about the show when it first aired was the issue that this was an interracial marriage between and white woman and a Cuban man. http://www.csupomona.edu/~cgbates/202/tv2.pdf
(n.n., n.d.)
Another controversy is that the show was about a pregnant woman and in that time, you couldn’t show a pregnant woman on TV. http://scholarworks.umass.edu/berksconference/Workshops/180/5/ (Eisenberg, 2011)
This show broke some controversies and showed them on TV. First of all: interracial marriage. This is something that is very common these days, but back then it wasn’t acceptable to marry someone from another country. In some cultures or families, it is still something controversial. As example, my own culture: I am from Egypt and from my background, I know it is hard to marry someone who is not Arabic or not Muslim. If a show would be made about an Arabic woman married with a Catholic Dutch person, that would be very weird to see and so was the interracial marriage in ‘I love Lucy’.
Secondly: a pregnant women on TV.
Back in these days, there was a ‘Baby Boom’, also called ‘’Pregnancy Bump’’. Pregnant women had a lot of cultural critics, dealt with health care experts, public opinion makers, and business leaders who had a stake in the expanding market of maternity and baby care merchandising. This examination uncovers the tensions and confusion behind a complex process that redefined Americans’ perceptions of pregnancy (Eisenberg, 2011).
We could compare this to these days: now-a-days one of the controversies on TV being showed, is having sex on TV. Sex is still a taboo in a lot of cultures. People do not talk about it easily. But still there are some TV shows that show sex, like ‘Grey’s Anatomy’, ‘Nashville’ and ‘Mad men’.(Pachter, 2013)
Also the issue ‘Safe sex’ is still talked about, because a lot of young aged people do not think about being safe when having sex.
This leads to the pregnant woman on TV back in the 50’s. it wasn’t expected to show off pregnant women on TV, because that would mean that this women isn’t healthy, because of unsafe sex. But, this show gives another view on pregnant women’s pregnancy. That it is normal to be pregnant. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0043208/awards?ref_=tt_awd http://eddieonfilm.blogspot.nl/2010/10/and-life-is-heaven-you-see.html
1970-1990: Three’s company
For this decade I have chosen the TV show called ‘Three’s company’, which was aired between 1977 and 1984. (Wikipedia, n.d.) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0075596/awards?ref_=tt_awd http://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/threes-company
Once upon a time, in a 70's TV show, there were three young women. While these women didn't join a police academy, they did share an apartment together. Unfortunately, one of them decided to get married and move out, leaving the other two searching for a new roommate. They found that new roommate in a young aspiring chef...named Jack. The two women decided to take Jack as their new roommate, but only if he would pretend gay, so landlord Mr Rope won’t kick him out. (n.n., 2004)
Critics tore into the thin plots and sexually charged dialogue. Today, the sexual references would be considered quite tame. But in 1977, Americans were just getting used to the idea that people of the opposite sex were living together before marriage. In addition, the term "gay rights" was becoming a major topic of discussion, thanks to efforts at the time by some American cities to grant equal rights to gay and lesbian people. So it was a bit controversial for Jack to don the swishy demeanor of a stereotypical gay man, to fool the clueless Mr. Roper into letting him stay in the girls' apartment (Spadoni, 2003).
This meaning that the controversies here were: living together before marriage and being gay. These things were part of culture. While these days youth live alone or with housemates when they are studying, but back then it wasn’t normal to live with someone without being married with that person. Now it is still controversial within some cultures. This show showed how it was to be young and live with friends. Also being gay was controversial. Now-a-days we still have people who don’t accept ideas. Back then, it was worse. Most people didn’t accept gays. Though, this show still showed someone who acted gay. These controversies would change peoples mind in the70’s and 80’s. http://www.televisionheaven.co.uk/threes.htm 1990-2009: Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
For this decade I have chosen the TV program ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’, which was aired for the first time in 1990 and the last episode was in 1996. (Wikipedia, n.d.) http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0098800/awards?ref_=tt_awd http://www.commonsensemedia.org/tv-reviews/the-fresh-prince-of-bel-air
A wealthy family living in Bel-Air, California, receives a dubious gift from their poorer relations in Philadelphia when Grammy Award-winner Will Smith arrives as The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air. His mother wants him to learn some good old-fashioned values from his successful relatives. But Will shatters the sophisticated serenity of Bel-Air with his streetwise common sense, much to the dismay of his upper-crust uncle, Philip Banks (James Avery), Aunt Vivian (Janet Hubert-Whitten and Daphne Maxwell Reid) and three conceited cousins, Carlton (Alfonso Ribeiro), Hilary (Karyn Parsons) and Ashley (Tatyana Ali) - and even the butler, Geoffrey (Joseph Marcell). As the Banks family opens their home - and their checkbook - to their needy relative, Will adapts easily to their indulgent lifestyle. Yet, he reminds everyone that the simplest pleasures of family life can't be bought at any price.(TV.com, n.d.)
What really made this sitcom relevant to its time were the issues of race and social class present in almost every episode. The controversies found in “The Fresh Prince of Bel Air” were not due to an affluent African American family living in Bel Air (for the Cosby’s already existed in New York), but to the comments and social issues Will brought to the forefront while living with the Banks’. Coming from a bruised and tarnished neighborhood, Will is astonished at how ignorant and oblivious his cousin Carlton is to the real world issues surrounding blacks at the time and often confronts him so to make him aware. (Bernhard, n.d.)http://www.wstudies.pitt.edu/wiki/index.php?title=The_Construction_of_Race_in_%22The_Fresh_Prince_of_Bel_Air%22
What was interesting in this show was not the controversy, but that it was representative and it showed another side of life. Americans thought that all Afro-Americans where from the ghetto, but there were some who reached of middle or high class by their studies.
The other side of life they showed was that even if you are poor, you can still make life fun and enjoy it. This show also showed that you people from the ghetto could live with a higher class family.

Social background
I love Lucy

I Love Lucy was the first television series to show an interracial couple (Ball and husband Desi Arnaz). It also was the first to feature a pregnant woman playing a pregnant woman, but could not use the word "pregnant" on telecasts, according to the Lucy Desi Center. Additionally, Ball was the first woman to head a Hollywood studio. (Fernandez, 2011)
The comedy series was groundbreaking for women. The Lucy character challenged traditional female household roles. Lucy constantly found herself in situations where women did not belong in 1950s culture. Much of the humor centers on her awkwardness as she tries to break out of the typical housewife lifestyle, which creates friction with her husband. (Cosper, n.d.)
First of all: interracial couples. This was a big issue back then in the 50’s, because half of the states still had laws prohibiting interracial marriage. (Robinson, 2013) http://www.religioustolerance.org/hom_mar14.htm
Secondly: pregnant women on TV. This was also an issue, because of the ‘Baby Boom’ after the second World War (the 50’s). women were being criticized by doctors. Also the whole society. There were too many baby’s born, so health care had to expand. While a war just ended, there was not so much money. All the money went to the war, so not so many people could care for their kids.
Last but not least: the dominant role Lucy had as a housewife. This was socially not acceptable. Men were dominant. They had to work, while women had to care for their children at home, clean and make food.
All by all, this show broke some social idea’s, like interracial couples, pregnant women and the dominant role of women in their household. I think it is good to bring other idea’s to a certain issue, if people have a thought about it, which is not right. Though, there is danger airing something on TV people don’t accept. This show took that risk and opened people’s mind.

Three’s company
Being gay in the 70’s was something people didn’t talk about in the 70’s. Gays also wouldn’t come out for being gay. This show is actually talking about being (or pretending) gay. (Lizzy-tish, 2006)
It also talked about being young and living together without being married.
Gays and living together were not socially acceptable.
First of all: gays. During the 70’s there was a group called ‘’Stonewall’’. A group of gays who fought for their rights, because gays were not accepted by society. With this program, gays could be represented better, because this TV show was showed in every household.
Secondly: living together. Up until the 1970s, American couples living together were considered to be "living in sin." (Discovery, n.d.) http://curiosity.discovery.com/question/couples-live-together-before-marriage
When comparing the 70’s and 80’s with now: back then less than 20% of men and women up until the age of 30 lived together, while now it is approximately 60%. (Beaujouan; Brolchain, 2011) Cohabitation and marriage in Britain since the 1970s
Éva Beaujouan and Máire Ní Bhrolcháin
ESRC Centre for Population Change, University of Southampton
All by all: this show had some issues that were not socially acceptable. Just like ‘I love Lucy’ this show took a risk by showing issues people wouldn’t like to see. Though, it had changed minds over the years.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The social background told in this shows is the difference between poor and having no opportunities and being rich while having a lot opportunities. It is showed by putting a young ghetto guy in a richer family with high morals.
It also describes the life of a race, an Afro-American society.
This show is a good representation of this society getting up in America, where there was racism against Africans. Blacks were always lower in America, but by the years, especially in the 90’s, a lot of Afro-Americans were getting more jobs.
This show was a good representation of Africans in America back then, because it showed how Africans also were educated and how a ghetto man tries to be as good as the people who were grown up in a wealthy neighborhood.

Political background
I love Lucy
This show had to deal with ‘The Motion Picture Production Code’. It was the set of industry moral censorship guidelines that governed the production of most United States motion pictures released by major studios from 1930 to 1968. It is also popularly known as the Hays Code, after Hollywood's chief censor of the time, Will H. Hays. The Motion Pictures Producers and Distributors of America (MPPDA), which later became the Motion Picture Association of America (MPAA), adopted the code in 1930, began enforcing it in 1934, and abandoned it in 1968, in favor of the subsequent MPAA film rating system. The Production Code spelled out what was acceptable and what was unacceptable content for motion pictures produced for a public audience in the United States. The office enforcing it was popularly called the Hays Office in reference to Hays, inaccurately so after 1934 when Joseph Breen took over from Hays, creating the Breen Office, which was far more rigid in censoring films than Hays had been. (n.n, 2009)
The code was intended as self-censorship by and for the American film industry and a major reason for the introduction was the fear of setting government censorship. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
This would make it hard for TV shows to decide themselves what would be in their show and what not. For example, it was forbidden to show a couple sharing a bed on TV, even if they both are just sitting on the bed to have a conversation. If they wanted to do so, on of the two had to put one leg at least out of bed and on the ground. The makers of this show didn’t like these rules, like many others didn’t. So what they did was come up with a reason or a scene where they could do these things anyway. The “I Love Lucy” example got around the Hays Code by having its characters share a bed “for explicit purposes of comedy.”
Three’s company
Because it was hard being gay in the 70’s, there we some movements coming up in this decade. In the UK, the first gay movement was founded in 1970 and was called ‘London Gay Liberation Front’. People protested for the unequal rights for gays. It also made it easier for this show then to talk about gays. (Stonewall, n.d.)
There were also rules made up against gays. The Stonewall marchers called for "Gay Power" and "Gay Liberation," and their politics and consciousness transformed a small reform movement into a grassroots gay liberation crusade. Hundreds of gay rights organizations in American cities demanded legal reform, access to public services, and an end to discrimination. By 1973 the American Psychiatric Association removed homosexuality from its list of mental disorders in response to lobbying by gay liberation groups who charged that psychiatry provided the underpinnings for many ant homosexual. (Cengage, 1995) after many years, in 2003 the LGBT rights in the USA came. LGBT rights related laws including family, marriage, and anti-discrimination laws vary by state, but the main right and law is that gays are allowed all over the country.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
The series was originally an NBC production in association with The Stuffed Dog Company and Quincy Jones Entertainment. After the show was released to syndication in 1994, the series distributed with Warner Bros. Television Distribution, which continues to distribute the show worldwide (although NBCUniversal does own the series' copyright). WGN America was the first cable channel to acquire the series in 1997, TBS acquired the series a year later in 1998; both channels carried the series until the fall of 2003, though TBS reacquired the series in 2007. The theme song was shown in the original TBS run, but after TBS re-acquired Fresh Prince in 2007, the opening credits were truncated and the theme song removed and replaced with the instrumental version used as the show's closing theme; these versions also re-added portions of scenes cut from the original syndicated prints for some episodes, particularly those from seasons 3-6. TBS continues to air the series today, early in the morning. Reruns also aired on WPIX-TV on weeknights from 1994 until 1996, and as a weekday basis, sometimes on weekends until 2004. (Wikipedia, n.d.)
This meaning that not any show could be just aired, you needed the credit. Doing this is illegal. Not just the credit to air the show, but also for the theme song there we credits needed.

Cultural background
I love Lucy
I Love Lucy also exemplifies the mid-century concern with morality and the censorship that dominated the 1950s. With the beginning of the Cold War and McCarthyism in full bloom, censorship was not only tolerated by many Americans, it was seen as necessary to protect the purity of American culture. In 1952, the National Association of Radio and Television Broadcasters created their own censorship guidelines in fear that Congress would otherwise implement government controls. The stated goal of these guidelines was “to foster and promote the commonly accepted moral, social, and ethical ideals characteristic of American life” (History Matters). The guidelines were also implemented to protect the youth of America from crime, violence, and sex on TV. (n.n., n.d.)
I Love Lucy suggested that women did and should have as much power as men, that women could do business and run a home successfully, that women could have children at a much older age, and the show broke social and racial taboos. These characteristics of the show have left a long lasting impact on American television culture and in a way Ball has influenced these changes. (n.n., n.d.) http://www.kcd.org/sites/default/files/Lucille_Ball.pdf even though there American politicians tried to keep the ethnical morals, ‘I love Lucy’ still brought some changes to people’s ideas. The main idea was that women could have more power within their household. While back in the time, women didn’t have any control in their house. The man worked all day to get money while women cleaned the house, cooked and cared for the children.
Over time, when television came into existence and more and more households had one, these televisions and their programs had more influence on how people should think and behave. Due to this, peoples morals and cultural behavior has changed over time.

Three’s company
One of the topics in this show was ‘being gay’. In the eighties it was not really an out-spoken topic. It was culturally not really accepted. Until now, there is a lot of discussion about gay. This show could change people’s mind towards gays.
Most people were catholic in the 70’s and 80’s in the USA. Within the catholic religion, it was not acceptable to be gay. The social thought about gays comes from the religion. It is forbidden to be gay.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Since its start, the television industry has been criticized for perpetuating myths and stereotypes about African-Americans through characterizations, story lines, and plots. The situation comedy has been the area that has seemed to draw the most criticism, analysis, and disapproval for stereotyping. From Sanford and Son and The Jefferson’s in the 1970s to The Cosby Show (1984) and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air in the 1990s, sitcoms featuring black casts and characters have always been controversial. However, their significance upon our American culture cannot be disregarded. During the 1950s and 1960s, 97% of the families were Caucasian. In the first five years of the 1990s, nearly 14% of the television families were African-American (Bryant 2001). These statistics obviously show the substantial impact our American culture has had on African-American television families.
This sitcom emphasized positive African-American stereotypes, such as honesty, love, strong family values, and success. The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air also demonstrated that the problems money can bring were not confined to one race. (123HelpMe, 2013)

Historical background
I love Lucy
This show brought a new idea about women. Here the women was central, while first the man was the central one in house. Before it used to be that men had the control. They took all decisions in the household, because they had the money and the work, while women just had to clean, cook and care for the children. This show brought a difference. The roles were totally different. Lucy, the main character of this show, had paid work and was the central key in the house. This brought a difference in history. Now-a-days more and more women have paid work and take decisions as well, while men also clean and care for kids.
Three’s company
Before the seventies, there was no such a thing as promoting gays.
Also living alone in the seventies as well as being young wasn’t that famous. Just 6% owned a house, while now it is 15% (Doughty, 2009).
While in the 70s more and more gays stood up for their rights, it was not normal before to do so. Gays were promoted all over the country (USA). This has changed many people’s mind about gays. Also this show showed a difference.
Because of the upcoming control of TV in households, more and more young people and students wanted to leave their homes and live with roommates.
Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
Above all, The Fresh Prince of Bel Air communicates a message dear to the hearts of many in white America: that it is the responsibility of the black middle class to clean up the ghetto—that bourgeois African Americans, not the taxpaying innocents of the greater white society, have the obligation to spend time and money and sweat preparing inner-city residents to succeed in the capitalist world. (Macdonald, n.d.)
This means that black people were poor and lived in the ghetto’s, while now black people are also part of the middle and high class. Africans had always been the poor ones. They were used as slaves and weren’t paid that much or not at all. They had never been more than slaves and didn’t have any education. The idea that African Americans are poor still remained in peoples mind up until the 90s. African Americans started to educate themselves and go to universities. More and more Africans had a job, that used to be just for white people.
This show had changed peoples idea about African Americans over the years and showed that Africans also have good jobs.

Target group

I love Lucy
Age: All ages
Gender: women
Lifestyle: working lifestyle
Income: 20 million dollars annually
Demography: 18-to-49
Channel: CBS

The reason this show is for all ages is because there are no sexual references at all in the entire show. Most shows today make countless sexual jokes and references. Whereas the I Love Lucy was literally a clean, funny comedy. The pranks she pulled and the jokes she told were simply funny and amusing. An adult acting like a child and pulling childish stunts is funny to watch for anyone. This is a show that is truly family friendly. Any age group can watch it and feel comfortable with each other in the room while watching the show. (n.n., n.d.) http://www.kcd.org/sites/default/files/Lucille_Ball.pdf

Here is an example of one of the jokes in the show:
LUCY: I wish there were a place to sit where we could see both sides.
Bus Driver: There is.
LUCY: Where?
Bus Driver: I can strap you to the front of the bus.
LUCY: Well!

The gender this show is focused on is women. It tells about Lucy, the main character in the show. She has a central role in the show and in her house. This show shows how a woman could take initiative as well and be as good in decision making as a man can be.
Her lifestyle can be described as the working mother. She has got a job and cooks and cleans at home as well. This also shows that women are able to work as well as cleaning and cooking at home besides it.
CBS Chief Executive Leslie Moonves said "I Love Lucy" is still delivering about $20 million in revenue. Reruns of the show still run on a regular basis on the cable channel TV Land. (Flint, 2012) http://articles.latimes.com/2012/sep/20/entertainment/la-et-ct-cbslucy-20120920 I think people still like to watch these shows because of their jokes. Now-a-days most shows are sexually contained and not as funny as ‘I love Lucy’. Also the old generation would still like to watch these shows, because it’s something from their time.
‘I love Lucy’ was successful for its 18-to-49 demographic. CBS was known for its older viewers, mainly 50-plus crowd, so CBS chairman Leslie Moonves wanted to prove that also a younger group would watch CBS. ‘I love Lucy’ was the main program that let a younger group watch CBS.
Three’s company
Age: 12+
Gender: men and women
Lifestyle: enjoying life
Income: $30,000 (later $150,000) per episode
Demography: females 18 to 30
Channel: ABC
I think this show isn’t aimed at a children. Its humor has got a sexual tones and there is flirting in the show. Also Mr Ropes often refers to Jack as "one of the girls", because he is gay, and may raise questions from kids. There were girls drinking in the bar as well, which I think could be a bad influence on kids. The age 12+ could understand the jokes better, since they are teenagers.
I think this show is for both men and women, because the story is about both genders, two girls and a guy and how they live together as roommates.
Its lifestyle is about enjoying life. The girls flirt and go to bars and drink. The two girls also live with a guy. They really wanted they guy to stay as a roommate, so they had to lie to the landlord, by telling him that this guy is gay.
Suzanne Somers’ salary was 30 000 dollars per episode. This salary remained until the 4th episode. She proposed a salary of 150 000 dollars in the 5th episode and she wanted 10% of the profit. She said that if she wouldn’t get that salary, she would leave the show. Because she is so important for this show to run, they have accepted on this salary. I think that the rest of the cast had a salary around 30 000 dollars. (Wikipedia, n.d.) http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Three's_Company
I think this show is demographically for women. The reason is that the main characters are women. The age is also young, around 20, because the characters are also young. Their lifestyles fits the group of women between 18 and 30.

Fresh prince of Bel-Air
Age: teenagers between 12 and 17 years old
Gender: men and women
Lifestyle: Hip-Hop/ Urban
Income: average 910 371 013 dollars (the numbers, n.d.) http://www.the-numbers.com/people/series/FreshPrinceOfBelAir.php
Demography: teenagers
Channel: NBC
(Bukisa, 2009)
This show fits the age of teenagers very well, because it’s about a young aged man in his late teenagers years.

Differences as you see, sitcoms begin to target on a younger age. Younger ages begin to have their own interests. Also the income and the lifestyle. Because more people are adopting televisions in their houses, also people from lower classes began to watch tv. The lifestyles are also different. ‘I love Lucy’ has got housewifes as a lifestyle. ‘Three’s company’ has got youth as a lifestyle and ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’ has got Hip-Hop as a lifestyle.

Overlap
They are all focused on men and women. They are also targeted on the American society and are for men and women.

Review Sitcoms
As described by Marc’s analysis of comedy, he says that sitcoms are about familiarity, identification and redemption of popular beliefs. He also said that sitcoms attempts to push taboos in deviant directions. (Spangler, 2003)
I think it is true that sitcoms use daily situations and/or cultural belief and make fun out of it. People should also see themselves in it to understand the humour. Not just situations or cultural belief could be laughed about, but also taboos. I think taboos are easy to break by sitcoms. People learn how to deal with them or to laugh about it. People could also learn to talk about it, because the media is talking to the audience about a certain taboo.
Review Fresh Prince of Bel-Air
As said by Humez, The Fresh Prince of Bel-air is about two groups of African Americans: poor, ghetto-dwelling ones and ones who are wealthy and suburban, still able to interact. These two communities are blend together in this show. This show is not just about two communities having the same interests, but also about how racism still impacts their lives. Participants argue that, on the one hand, the show failed to represent the full economic spectrum of African Americans, but also seem to believe that all economically ascended Blacks have their immediate roots in the underclass and/or ghetto. J.C.B. said that he likes Carlton as a character in the show, because he is a good student, while being an Afro American. He just doesn’t like that they put him in situations of being with other Afro Americans who laugh at him, because he is a smart kid.
I think that this show is a good representation for Afro Americans. It shows how they still make the best of the situation (class and racism). It also shows that there is an educated and wealthy society within Afro Americans society. I think the economically spectrum isn’t the most important thing that has to be showed in this show. I think it is more about class, wealth and education that less the racism, because that leads to economical wealth.

Assignment 3
Influences of digitalization on the television sector
Positive influences
#1
One of the positive influences of digitalization is that there is more channel choice, so the interest of people who have a digital TV is broader. Hereby goes that people could choose what and when to watch TV.
The trend I think of is control. People can control their own time. They are not stick to a certain time for a TV program.

The following pyramid could fit:
Control

New Technolgy

Digitalization

Here you see that digitalization brought new technology. Through this new technology, we can control our time (Wils; Ziegelaar, 2005). This means that if a TV show is at 3pm and you are outside, that you could still re-watch it when you are home or pause it until you get home.
Due to this, that people couldn’t watch a certain TV show and producers need to get as much viewers as possible, they came up with the idea to give control to the consumer. The control to watch a certain show at the time they want. To do so, new technology is needed. This technology helped digital TV into existence.

#2
TV has become a way for people to express their idea. Now it is interactive, TV producers know what the interests are of consumers. Now people’s interest is more on TV. Here again, people have the control over what will be shown in TV shows (Van Dijck, 2012). This also helps TV shows to get a lot of viewers.
The trend development hereby could be:

Control
New Technology

Digitalization

To get a better view of what people would like to see on TV, you could let them have control/influence on TV’s content. Therefore, you need to have the technology. The technology used here is internet. Through internet people could express their idea freely. Internet is also used as interaction. There is not just a one-way message (from TV to audience), but a two-ways message. This means that TV delivers a message, but the audience could also give feedback in it. This could let people control what is acceptable on TV and what not.

Negative influence
#1
Because of control when people could watch a TV show, now-a-days less people watch advertisements. People skip them, because when you re-watch a show, there are now advertisements inbetween. The shows are recorded by DVRs.
This would lead to a loss of money for TV channels and the company which offers the advertisement. Besides, the company of this offer, would have less recognition, thus less people will buy their products. This is due to control, which people have now through digital TV.
Because of loss of money for companies, they came up with a new trend: place commercials on YouTube as banners and as video’s that pop-up before the video’s.
#2
Another negative influence of digital TV is that TV is personalized. People have a schedule of TV shows that they follow. Due to controlling what is on TV, you could watch show after show.
Due to this trend, people just sit at home and don’t go outside a lot. TV offers a lot more now-a-days by offering new technology, like DVRs, which allows you to record a certain program or more than one program. Health is going to be much worse, because of sitting at home and watching TV all day. The trend that had been developed here is personalized digital TV by DVRs.

Trends/development other 4 sectors

Music
Now-a-days people don’t buy CD’s. They like to go to concerts more than buying a CD. Also because the music is offered on the internet. A concert gives another experience. Illegal downloads can have a viral effect and can still make a lot of money. Most music is downloadable for free on the internet. The more people get access to a song, the more fans a singer can have. The more fans this singer has, the more people will go to the shows, because shows are not downloadable and people are always willing to pay for it. (Diract Beats, n.d.)
This trend, concerts, is created by record companies. Now-a-days they offer a 360 deal to artists. This includes more than just selling records. It consists of the following: concert, merchandising, all rights, publishing and websites. The reason is, as said, that CDs don’t sell that much anymore.
Because of this trend, a lot of companies came into existence in the last few years. One of the biggest companies that offers events is Live Nation Concerts. This company produces over 20.000 concerts yearly for 2000 artists worldwide.
Events
The tech revolution
We see augmented reality, mobile apps and integrated social media supporting consumer events. These tools are a great way for clients to maintain contact with consumers, and to send custom information before, during and after a live event. (Hurley, 2012)
This is made to maintain audience’s attention and experiences. Also for marketing it is good to use these tools, because within marketing, you have to follow your target audience. So, if the target audience is using more mobile apps, then you need to use this tool to get attention from them and let them experience the event by this tool.
Movies
To get more attention from customers to new movies, a new way is needed.
‘’Online and mobile distribution of movies is expected to be the fastest growing sector in future with growing dominance of the internet experience over all content consumption and increasing broadband penetration.’’ (Reuters, 2012)
This is needed to still make money, by getting the audience’s attention. The audience uses more and more the internet, so by advertising on the internet, people would still like to see the movie. As I have mentioned before, you have to follow the target audience when you market. So, if this target audience uses more and more the internet these days, then this tool could be considered as an opportunity to reach this group.
The internet could not just be used for marketing, but also distribution. Now-a-days there are a lot of websites which offer movies online by subscription. An example of one of these websites is Netflix. This works as follow: you subscribe and pay a monthly fee. After paying this fee, you can watch any movie at home or outside, on you mobile phone, TV or computer (all online).
Interactive media
The mobile transition:
More and more games are on mobile devices. Even Facebook helps games, that were focussed on the web, to get on mobile phones. Mobile games continue to gain traction.
This is because of the players. Businesses follow the players; they follow them where they are going. (Graft, 2012)
Since gaming is a very shifting field, there are a lot of changes within games. Every few months there is a new game or another device or tool being used for this game. People get bored fast with one device, so they switch a lot from devices. Also renewing games could be very useful to fulfill gamers wishes.
Mobile devices could be used very well these days, because these devices have a lot of improvement these days. These devices are more able to do. This means that this device could be an opportunity for the gaming industry. Mobile phones could be used to offer games now-a-days, since everybody uses one.

Field visits
Digital playground Rotterdam
During this event, we had to make a mini movie. We had to do that in Rotterdam.
I really liked it, because I could use my own creativity. The less good thing was the time. We didn’t have that much time to make our mini movie, so we had to make the movie fast.
I would take more time planning, because I haven’t thought about the script so well. If I would do that, shooting the movie would go faster and better.
I would add more time, so visitors could use that time to use more creativity.
Learning point:
I have learned that there is always a time limit and within that time I have to come up with something creative. But, planning is also very important. Without a good planning, there is no good project.
International Arab women film festival
This is a yearly, worldwide film festival, which selects a few movies to show where the Arab woman is central.
I went to this festival to follow the workshop ‘Directing’.
I liked it, because the person who was giving this workshop, was an experienced person within this work field. The thing I didn’t like was that there weren’t that much people who went to this workshop. It would be more fun if there were much more people.
I would interact more with the ‘teacher’ so I could get more knowledge. I didn’t ask that many questions.
I would add more marketing to add more value for visitors. This event is a good event to catch more attention from more people. It has got a good topic and the people within this event are professional.
Learning point:
I have learned how a film is being directed and what is needed for a movie before filming it. Before, I didn’t know what mise-en-scene was and that colors could have a certain meaning in a movie.

Attending 2 TV shows (‘Pauw en Witteman’ & ‘Vermist’)
I went to these two live TV shows:
Pauw en Witteman
Vermist.
Pauw en Witterman is a Dutch talk show. The topics discussed in this show are mainly current news topics, often with one or more person(s) from the politics. The show is broadcasted every working day at Nederland 1 from 11pm until 12am.
Vermist is a Dutch where missing people are sought. This always happens with help from viewers who call to give tips.
I liked Vermist more than Pauw en Witteman, because it is more of my interest. I am not really interested in politics. I didn’t like Pauw en Witteman, because it was a non-stop one hour talk show, while Vermist had some moments where I could have a little moment for myself (though these we moments of maximum one minute).
I would go to different TV shows, so that it fits my own interest. Also when I am going to work, I would search for something I like.
I would change the time of the show Vermist to add more value to it. It is aired to late, because also young people should see these things, while Pauw en Witteman is for older people, so the time for that TV show is good.
Learning points:
I have learned how a live TV show is shot and that there must be no mistakes, because it’s live. Also the people attending in the TV show play a role. Especially in the show ‘Vermist’, because it is about people.

Vermist * What genre is this TV programme? How can you tell (recognisable conventions of the genre)?
Reality
It is recognisable, because it is about missing people. It is about real life. Emotions are real and not acted. * What is the target group? Why is this programme suitable/not suitable for the TV station or broadcaster?
This show is for everybody, because it is news. It is something everybody should know. And of course, they want to reach many people, because they want to get many tips about missing people.
This show is broadcasted on ‘Nederland 1’. It is suitable, because it is no commercial show. It is a show which gives information. * How many viewers tune into this programme on average? (be careful: indicate your sources)
Friday 2nd of March 2012: 1 405 000
Friday 16th of March 2012: 1 193 000
Friday 23rd of March 2012: 1 283 000
On average, ‘Vermist’ has got 1 250 000 viewers per show. * Crew: Who did what? How many cameras were there?
Jaap Jongbloed is the presenter of the show. Robin Boers is the director. Frederique Enthoven is the producer. There were 6 cameras. * What makes this programme good, in your opinion?
I think it is good, because there are not many shows with this theme (missing people). It is also for everybody. Everyone should know about it. * Where?
STUDIO 31
Sumatralaan 45, Mediapark (Decorcentrum)
Pauw & Witteman * What genre is this TV programme? How can you tell (recognisable conventions of the genre)?
Talk show
It is recognisable, because Pauw and Witteman talk with people, usually about politics. * What is the target group? Why is this programme suitable/not suitable for the TV station or broadcaster?
This show is for older people, because it is about politics and it is broadcasted at a late time, so the topics are not understandable for young people and the time is also not suitable for your people.
This show is broadcasted on ‘Nederland 1’. It is suitable, because it is no commercial show. It is a show which gives information. * How many viewers tune into this programme on average? (be careful: indicate your sources)
Monday 28th of January 2013: 1 390 000 (kijkcijfers, 2013)
Tuesday 29th of January 2013: 1 323 000 (kijkcijfers, 2013)
On average Pauw & Witteman have 1 350 000 viewers a day. * Crew: Who did what? How many cameras were there?
Pauw and Witterman are the presenter of the show. Bert van der Veer, Siebe de Steenwinkel and Edith Ruyg are the director. Joanne Oldenbeuving is the producer. There were 6 cameras. * What makes this programme good, in your opinion?
I think it is good, because there are no such talk shows about politics. * Where?
Cultuurpark Westergasfabriek in Amsterdam.

Differences * There is a difference in genre. Vermist can’t be a talk show, because there is no conversation between 2 people, while Pauw & Witteman is about discussion. * The second difference is that Pauw & Witteman focus more on an older target group, while Vermist is focusing on a broader target group.
Overlaps
* Both shows are showed on public television, because they are both aimed to give information and are not for amusement.
I think Vermist is a better show, for me, because I am young and I am more interested in people who are missing than in politics.

Interview
I have asked ‘Gest & de Ruiter’, a Dutch company which provides a film crew for TV.
This is their description, as stated by them:
‘’ Gest & de Ruiter are an experienced Dutch film team, formed by Peter Gest & Christiaan van Nieuwenhuijzen. Gest & de Ruiter film reports, news items, and documentaries.
We are an all-round, down to earth film team with the very best equipment. Gest & de Ruiter knows what their customers want. We are very flexible and have many years of experience with film and video in The Netherlands and abroad. We understand our customer’s requirements and can make your shoot in the Netherlands or elsewhere a success.’’ (Gest & de Ruiter, n.d.)
I wanted to ask them questions to know how it is to work in this work field, how it is to work internationally, if it is hard to come to an agreement and how they find work. So, I have made some questions and sent it to the company by e-mail.
By this interview, I have learned what it is to work internationally and what pitfalls there are within negotiation and how to get to a solution. I have also learned how to get higher, mainly by offering yourself for free and work yourself way up.

Review ‘I love Lucy’

How much more can be said?, 29 June 2000

I want to echo all those who have praised Desi Arnaz--he was simply the best straight man in show business. Lucille Ball was incredibly funny, but when you watch her later series, there seems to be something missing--and it's of course Desi. He's hilarious, and as others have mentioned a real pioneer in TV production. Throw in his musical ability and he's hard to beat as performer by anyone (better than Jackie Gleason in my opinion).

As for the show itself, it's timeless. These days it's strange to watch MASH, All In The Family, Maude, they've all faded and seem hopelessly dated. Not so with I Love Lucy, it's just as funny today--no it doesn't deal with abortion, or teen suicide, it deals with funny people who are even funnier when they are together, who have great chemistry together and then the show puts them into genuinely funny situations. In todays politically correct world, one wonders if the thought police would have allowed Lucy to jab at Ricky's accent, or would require some sort of social message about Lucy's role as a housewife. Please. I tend to find more meaning in Ricky singing "I Love Lucy" or Lucy trying to sneak into Ricky's show down at the Tropicana after he's banned her than in all of Maude's tired feminist rants put together.

I Love Lucy..., 12 December 2002
Author: MovieAddict2013 from UK
Lucille Ball changed television forever when "I Love Lucy" hit the air in 1951. It featured a woman as a main character, which was rare back during that time and age. And the fact that the woman did not listen to her husband often was even more controversial. Everything the show was was rebellious. It was also extremely controversial because her husband was Cuban, and back in the '50's, barely anyone married other races, and if so, the subject was definitely not the premise for a television show.

So, through the ages, I Love Lucy has had a major impact on generations, and has not slipped into culture like many shows, but has been accepted into culture. Not to mention all the Lucy impersonators who have pageants each and every year. But the thing I remember most, is the famous "Eeeooowww!"

5/5 stars --

What more can one say?, 16 October 2004

Author: happipuppi13 from Phx. Arizona ("Arizona Smells Funny"!- Homer Simpson)
Decades after the ultimate popularity of the series, what more is there tosay about "Lucy"?

This show was one of,if not the very first, well put together sitcoms in TV history. The show is the original blueprint for what most sitcoms in the future would later become. There's really no bad episodes of this show and that's due not just to Lucille Ball but to Desi,Vivian and William as well!

It's the original re-run that launched the idea of syndicated re-runs for constant replay on local station and then on Nick At Nite & TV Land. Although some references on the show might make younger viewers scratch their heads, the comedy and stories are pretty timeless.

One of the best things about the Lucy character for me is not just her hilarious attempts at getting into Ricky's act but the way she,a woman of the 1950s,stands up for herself as a woman. I also like when the stories get sentimental when focusing on either their anniversary, the birth of the baby.

I especially like the scene in the Hollywood show, where Lucy's been offered a studio contract and she's been guilt tripped by Rick & the Mertzes about the fact she'd have to stay in Hollywood while they went back home to New York.

Imagining her career and then the sadder parts of being away from her family all come out in wonderful facial & body expression. Which demonstrated that she's not just a comedian, she was also an actress. (I hated that she gave up that once in a lifetime chance though.)

One last little thing to note,in the episodes where the Ricardos & Mertzes move to Connecticut, there is a Grandfather clock by the front door of Lucy & Ricky's home. I've noticed that this clock never says any other time but 12! In one show Ricky comes home from work at what should be evening but,of course, the clock still says 12. I never noticed that until the other day! Oh well,no sitcom is perfect! (End)

The Best Slapstick Comedy of the 70's, 3 July 2003
Author: Brian Washington (Sargebri@att.net) from Los Angeles, California
When this show first premiered, it was thought of only as a jiggle show. However, it turned out to be one of the best examples of slapstick comedy in the history of television. John Ritter showed that he was a master of physical comedy and it really showed on this show. Another thing that really helped to make this show great was the whole ensemble. I feel that Joyce DeWitt was totally underrated in her role as the sensible Janet and that she was the perfect counterpoint to Jack's leering personality. The only thing I was disappointed with was how they devolved Suzanne Somer's character, Chrissy. If you look closely at many of the early episodes, Chrissy wasn't quite the dumb blond that she later turned out to be. If anything she was more naive then dumb. Other than that, this show will always be a classic of the era it was produced in.

Greatest comedy show of all time, 1 October 2004
Author: mike biggs (mercyfulfate7410) from usa
I remember watching this when I was about 4 or 5 and just loving the theme song then, but now I can really appreciate it for soooo many other things. How a guy like Jack Tripper can get into so many hilarious predicaments is beyond me, but John Ritter (RIP) pulled off the character perfectly. No one else could have taken his place. He just had so much energy and really got into it and took physical comedy to a new level, and that would make a scene even funnier than it should of been. And Larry, either landlord, Janet and any of the blondes just added to the hilarity. Can't wait till' season 3 is out on DVD. Give me three's company any day instead any of these pointless, thoughtless reality shows.

For those who remember the good ole 70's of sitcom comedies, this was the one that broke the mold, 7 May 2002
Author: raysond from Chapel Hill, North Carolina
For those who don't remember when sitcoms were the ones that made you laugh out loud one minute and then laugh crying the next and to keep you guessing what Jack Tripper was up to next, then this was the show to watch.....During its run on ABC-TV from 1977-1984,Three's Company was the best American sitcom ever to grace the airwaves. Hands down. John Ritter to me was the all-time Macdaddy that kept it real. His portrayal of stumble-prone Jack was ingenious not to mention hilariously funny. Jack always knew what to do(or so it seems)when it came to the ladies especially dealing with his roommates Janet Wood and Chrissy Snow and even the upstairs neighbors The Ropers who was on Jack's every move.

Out of his other roommates only Joyce DeWitt's character Janet Wood, who was a stunning brunette beauty who was reasonable and sweet and reliable was Ritter's ONLY long-standing roommate throughout the shows' entire run. However, during and probably the best, and frankly the early years of the show(during the first four seasons),Suzanne Somers was the center of attention as ditzy, and sometimes not very bright Chrissy Snow, the lovable blonde. Somers became an overnight success during her four seasons on the show becoming a hottie for every junior high school boy in America who idolized her on their bedroom walls. Somers left the show in 1981 which was then in the top ten.

Also during the first four seasons of the show was the constant feuding and sometimes hilarious quarrels between the kids' landlord neighbors The Ropers. Actor Norman Fell was a comic genius(usually he'll played cops and detectives on other shows but here was a departure from that)here when he played Stanley Roper and Audra Lindley who was his wife Helen Roper who was bugged Stanley every time he did something. In 1981,The Ropers got their own sitcom show which didn't last very long.

During the shows' fourth season,Jenilee Harrison had a short stint as Chrissy's cousin Cindy Snow, who was another ditzy, not so bright, clumsy blonde. After Harrison's departure from the show, former "Dallas" star Priscilla Barnes tied things up as registered nurse Terri Alden, who was not like Chrissy or Cindy but this blonde had style and wasn't clumsy or ditzy and very bright. Also during that season,Don Knotts(aka Deputy Fife on Andy Griffith) filled in the gap as the "bachelor at large",Ralph Furley. Richard Kline starred as the lovable stud Larry who was a used car salesmen and swinger extraordinaire who was always getting Jack blind dates. In was here that Knotts and Ritter kept the show in the Top 10 for the next five seasons including Emmy nominations for Best Actor.

In all Three's Company was a laugh-a-minute riot and nothing more. The only element was the serious relationship of the roommates. They always had a understanding of each other and loved each other very much who would not let anyone get in the way of a friendship. However,it was always would not be that way.

The final episode of Three's Company in 1984,saw the departure of Jack Tripper as he finds that his bachelor days are finally over by finding the girl of his dreams, and eventually going down the aisle to get married on the show, leaving his two beautiful roommates behind. The show however, had a spin-off on this which featured Jack Tripper adjusting to the conditions of being married with his new wife and his new surroundings as a loyal and faithful husband.

However, this show is based on the 1960's British sitcom "A Man About The House".

Kudos to John Ritter,Joyce DeWitt, especially for their talents and bringing the laughs. You rock! Catch the re-runs on Nick at Nite.

Review ‘Fresh Prince of Bel-Air’

My all-time favourite TV series, 10 September 2003
Author: quixoboy from Ottawa, Ontario
Of all the shows, I believe that "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" is the one with which I can most identify with, since I have surely seen every single episode at least a dozen times - and yet it STILL never gets tired! I cannot get sick of this show, and it's making me a bit disturbed! Just what is it that makes this show so continually appealing, even around seven years since its final episode? I'm not sure...it's certainly not just one element. Every part of this show is magic: the wonderful acting from all involved; the witty (and often painfully hysterical) one-liners and banter between characters; the hip, cool atmosphere; the music...it all perfectly fits into what has to be one of the most remarkable and well-made sitcoms of the '90s.

I find myself shocked sometimes at the number of people who have totally forgotten about this show. Granted, it DID end in 1996, and obviously a lot has happened since then (most notably the skyrocketing music & film career of a certain lead star), but I mean, come on! This show is an undisputed classic! Who can forget the wild, crazy, and just plain amusing adventures we've had with Will Smith and the Banks family?

There were times when I was just addicted to this show, I remember...it was a while back when the episodes were running in syndication every evening on TBS SuperStation...I can't believe how this show can always manage to crack me up. It's incredible. I've grown to love all these characters so much, and even now, I still wouldn't pass up an opportunity to watch yet another priceless rerun.

I agree, though, that yes, a lot of the late, LATE episodes (around the second-last and final season) had their fair share of groans, and showed some glaring signs of tedium, but thankfully, the overwhelming positive qualities of the series tower over such minor flaws - including the mysterious re-casting of Aunt Vivian's role from Janet Hubert-Whitten to Daphne Maxwell Reid; the increasingly old-hat shtick of using the same stock footage whenever Jazz gets thrown out of the Banks residence for the umpteenth time; the cursed addition of a new cast member - little Nicky Banks (Ross Bagley), etc....

It's not an entirely perfect show, certainly (but then - what show is?), and it has had its fair share of ups and downs in its moderately impressive run of six years. However, when all is said and done, in the end, this show can proudly stand on its own as a pop culture treasure. It has evolved from what seemed initially to be an awkward, cheesy, quaint little '80s/'90s Cosby rip-off to a mature, slick, and fabulously written/produced/directed program. Pure gold is what this show is.

A truly underrated, and always entertaining, gem. "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air" is one for the ages.

THE BEST COMEDY OF ALL TIME!!!!!, 29 May 2003
Author: DominqueZarinha (flygirl2070@hotmail.com) from Trinidad
I absolutely love this show! I cannot ever recall an episode in which I did not laugh. Will Smith is so hilarious, everything he says always cracks me up. He also has this way of making eye contact with the camera whenever he's done something stupid or did something clever. I love the way Will always picks on Carlton and Uncle Phil. Will Smith, I think he's one of the best megastars in the world today. Vivian (Daphane Maxwell Reid and Janet Hubert Whitten), both portrayed the character excellently I must say. Carlton, what can I say? He always cracks me up. I'll never forget the episode where he and Will were imprisoned and Carlton started freaking out, wow, man, I literally fell down laughing away. Ashley (Tatyana Ali) I love her character. Uncle Phil (James Avery), he's a lawyer turned judge and a father who teaches good moral values to his children. I love his character. There is also Geoffrey. Wow, he is the most sarcastic butler around. He always makes fun of Uncle Phil and boy do I get off with laughter whenever I see him. But the show only had one problem and that was the character Hilary. No offence to Karyn Parsons whom I think is a beautiful and talented actress but the character of Hilary was seriously messed up. Here you have a 21 year old woman still living with her parents and won't go out to look for a job. All she concerned with is the way she looks. I think Hilary was the most annoying person on show. I HATED HILARY. She shouldn't have been like that. Gosh, everytime I had to see her, I would switch the channel until that part was gone. But nevertheless, I still loved the show. I've been watching the reruns since 2000 and I must say, I never get fed up of it. I look forward to it EVERYDAY. I was surprised that it was not included on RANK's Top 25 comedies of all time. This show should have at the top. If anyone does not think this show is funny, then something must be wrong. If I feel depressed and need a good laugh, all I have to do is watch this show and get tonnes of jokes. I wish they would have like the whole 5 or 6 seasons on DVD or VHS so I could go buy it. I give this show two thumbs up. Rating- 10/10, 100% Pure and raw comedy!

Hilarious comedy that everyone can enjoy, 21 August 2007

Author: vince200002000 from United Kingdom
This show is my favourite show on nick@nite. It's the only TV show that really makes me laugh. Of coarse that's only one great aspect of the show's magical touch of comedy. The acting is great and the show's characters each have their own individual and comical personality that the viewer may relate too. The storyline of the series is quite interesting. A city boy, Will Smith who was born and raised in West Philadelphia was sent to live with his rich aunt and uncle in Bel-Air.

The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air is a show you'll never get tired of. The attitudes of each character only builds up the humour. Carlton, the geek who thinks so highly of himself. Hilary, the stuck up brat. Can't forget Geoffrey the butler with the wise Aleck attitude and many more.

All in all, The Fresh Prince Of Bel-Air is great fun and laughs for the whole family
