February 27, 2011 Car accident injuries can occur because of driver distractions, cell phone usage, and excessive speed. Getting into a car accident can lead to several unwanted consequences, including permanent injuries, loss of earnings, etc. Motor vehicle accidents are a major cause of death in the United States. Some accidents are just what the word implies, but many could be avoided. Knowing the major causes of crashes can help drivers improve their chances of steering clear of them.
Driver distractions are the leading cause of most auto accidents. As a result, police everywhere have begun aggressively ticketing people that engage in distracted driving and endanger other drivers, passengers and pedestrians. In order to safely drive a car, you must give the road your full attention. Distracted driving is especially dangerous because, whereas drunk driving usually occurs at night, automobile accidents caused by distracted drivers can happen all day. It’s a scary thought.
Cell phone use has become so popular these days that many times we do not realize how often we are utilizing our cell phones. Cell phone use while driving has increased so significantly within the last few years that, at any time during the day, as many as 10 percent of all drivers are using a hand-held or hands-free phone. Using a headset or a Bluetooth cell phone is not necessarily safer than hand-held cell phone usage. Voice activated systems are, however, less risky if drivers need not take their eyes off the road or their hands off the steering wheel often or for long periods of time. Some believe that an absolute cell phone ban while driving is safer and more practical for everyone on the road. You’ve seen them on the highway. Many drivers ignore the speed limit and drive 10, 20, and sometimes 30 mph over the limit. Speed

Virtually anyone who has a driver’s license has been introduced to the idea that distracted driving causes accidents. However, the consequences of distracted driving are far more than just predictable and often taken lightly. Predictable events can be avoided. Since these are predictable events they are preventable. The choices that drivers make affect more people than they may realize, thus making them responsible for the consequences that result from those choices. On a daily basis more than 15 American deaths and another 1,200 injuries are attributed to drivers that are distracted while driving on the very roads most of us use every day (Harvard Men’s Health Watch, page 7). Distractions can be controlled at a minimum by drivers that make the choice to drive responsibly. There are three types of distractions that have been labeled as the “triple threat” to driving; Visual distraction, manual distraction, and cognitive distraction are the makeup of this triple threat (Harvard Men’s Health Watch, page 6).…

Texting or using a cell phone while driving is very hazardous to yourself and the people surrounding you. One reason the majority of people are against this action is because it causes a great amount of car accidents every year. While driving, adults and teenagers cannot resist the urge to pick up their cell phone and send a text or respond to one. When the driver hears this phone vibrating, nothing can stop them from checking the notification on their phone. As soon as the driver’s eyes meet their cellular device, their focus on the road is drawn away.…

Distracted driving is one of the fastest growing problems in the United States. It is starting to be considered as serious as drunk driving based on the dangerous outcomes. According to the Department of Transportation (2012), “distracted driving was a cause of roughly 450,000 accident-related injuries and nearly 5,500 fatalities in 2009 alone” (para. 1). Drivers who allow themselves to become distracted while driving are not only endangering themselves, but other innocent bystanders.…

In the world we live in today, everything is about convenience and time. Unfortunately, many have taken modern day technology and combined that with extreme carelessness. When this occurs, the outcome is devastating. Throughout the years, cell phones have become the “in thing.” Many are using this technology to call, text, Facebook, and Tweet. With new distractions, comes less time to focus on reality. In a recent study, 34% of teens have stated that they have texted while driving a vehicle, and 52% of them have stated they have talked while driving a vehicle. In my opinion, that is complete selfishness. In that moment of receiving a text or call, they are only thinking about themselves, not the people they could hit, injure or kill. I would like to see every state in the United States have laws against using cell phones while driving; therefore, there would be less distractions, death, and guilt for more then half of the citizens in this country who use a cell phone while driving.…

Even though distracted driving causes disastrous accidents, some people still believe that they are experienced drivers who could perform another task while driving at the same time. The rates of car accidents in the U.S. “rose 7.2% last year to 35,092—the largest increase in 50 years—and distracted driving played a role in 10% of those deaths (Darrow). The main cause of distracted driving is the use of an electronic device while driving.…
