Misión Católica Nuestra Señora De Las Américas (Catholic Mission of Our Lady of the Americas)
Religion is very important to most people in society today. It has been around for many years and many different religions have emerged. It is hard for a person to step into a religious environment that is unfamiliar to them. I have never been inside a church and all of my life my family never really told me about religion. The social phenomenon I studied was a Catholic Mass. On Sunday morning, October 23, 2011, I attended the Catholic Mission of Our Lady of the Americas Catholic Church in Lilburn, GA. Stepping into the church, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I had no idea what would happen or if I would stand out from the crowd as a new-comer. I did get stares, but everyone was very friendly. They wanted to get to know about me and my background. My experience was very overwhelming because I did not know what to do. There was so much kneeling, praying, standing up, and people doing the signs of the cross; I had no idea when to do these things. Catholicism has been a long-standing part of American history because Christianity has been around for years therefore it is culturally accepted. Today most of society can accept different cultures and religious beliefs unlike people years ago. According to the church, they are guided by the principles of Jesus and are protected by Our Lady of Guadalupe (the Virgin Mary). The church is home to Hispanic immigrants. Its goals are to provide its people with “growing faith, promoting human development, enhancing their dignity and cultural wealth” (Misión). Believers of Catholicism are most likely to participate in this belief and event. People during this event, tend to put everything aside as they step inside the church and focus more on their religion.
