Cathedral: Mario and Unforgettable Moment
Cathedral
What is your cathedral, meaning turning point or unforgettable moment that changed your life?
In every people’s life there is something really important in order to think differently. In my life, the unforgettable moment is our university exam results clarification day. It was came from 2 years ago. It was my hardest year I was studying my dream university. Saying it honestly, I was not a diligent student as the same as the same as this year ; however, I can use advantages in correct way. Both my father and mother told me that Ankara is the best city for a student because both of them studied in Ankara. As I mentioned before I am not a diligent person. For that reason, throughout my high school year my father did not trust me. He made fun of me when I said to him one day I will study in Koç University. Whatever the reason it was, my father gave me a promise. The only way to study in İstanbul is Koç University. The day when the results were announced I can hardly believe that y. It was my first choice and the one university which is İstanbul. So, that day changed my life and have an importance place in my memories.

What would I do If I were Nunez ?
In the Country of The Blind, Nunez who is our main character fall in love with a woman. He have to sacrifice his sight in order to marry with his love ; however, he couldn’t do it. In my opinion, he do the wrong thing because in todays world love is nothing for me. I know it sounds really feminist but what can I do ? People can find an another love , another person who make them really happy yet it is impossible to find an another family. If the story went like that, some people have to sacrifice something for family, I strongly support that we have to sacrifice it because they are foundation of our life.

Sounds of my childhood
It hard to count my childhood sound but I can say that roughly three sounds have special place in my memories. The first one the sound of lawnmower. Especially in summer ,

In the opening of this story, the narrator is closed-minded to the idea of a blind man entering his home. “A blind man in my house is not something I looked forward to” (1). It is through his resistance that we are introduced to his insecurities, and the layer of doubt that overcomes him. He is a simple man who lives a simple life. He loves his wife, but is not even sure what the love he has with her entails. His wife is a very expressive woman, using poetry to describe feeling and emotion. He is dismissive of her talent and more obviously, of her. “I can remember I didn’t think much of the poem. Of course, I didn’t tell her that... something to read” (1). They’re lack of communication is what draws the woman even closer to the blind man. She shares an intimate and emotional bond with him that she has never been able to establish with the narrator.…

Both men’s relationship with the narrator’s wife is out looked as two different entities. Between Robert and wife, there is a deeper meaning between their friendships. The narrator wife emphasizes, “goddamn it, his wife’s just died! Don’t you understand that? The man’s lost his wife!” (108). Roberts’s wife ironically dies short after we’re introduced to her. He takes the opportunity to visit the narrator’s wife. The blind man is a Christ figure in the story and he saves their relationship by showing Roberts as an understanding and sociable person; which is how he redeems himself through interaction. The husband is given a new perspective in life for the better. The narrator and his wife’s marriage seems headed for a downfall. At the beginning of the short story, the narrator states “Maybe I could take him bowling” (107); however, as the story progresses he comforts his wife indicating, “It’s all right” (115) when the blind man and him are drawing the cathedral. The narrator makes an indirect rude comment regarding Robert. As the husband transcends his ego, his tone changes and we see a softer side of him. He starts to respect the people in his household.…

A persons ability to see is often taken for granted as it is in the story “Cathedral” by Raymond Carver. Although the title hints that the story is about a cathedral, it is really about two men who are blind. one of the men is Robert, the blind friend of the narrators wife. The other is the narrator, the husband himself; he is psychologically blind. through the husbands words and actions when he is dealing with Robert, the blind man, it is shown that the husband doesn’t “see” or understand what Roberts blindness means and how it changes or doesn’t change him as a person. At first, Robert makes the husband feel very uncomfortable, for the husband doesn’t know what to say or do around the blind man. As the story progresses, we can see a change in the husband, he seems to be able to see Robert as a person and not just a blind man.…
