The Caterpillar Corporation originated during the early 1900s when inventor Benjamin Holt created the first crawler tractor. Today Caterpillar is the world’s largest construction equipment manufacturer and distributor. For the past eighty five years Caterpillar has operated in dozens of countries across the world “making progress possible and driving positive and sustainable change on every continent” (Caterpillar). The Caterpillar Corporation currently has more than 500 locations worldwide and serves customers in more than 180 countries offering over 300 products between 21 brands. Caterpillar’s ethics are as strong and wide as its global operation. The companies’ ethics are best summarized in their vision and mission statements: Our vision is a world in which all people's basic requirements - such as shelter, clean water, sanitation and reliable power - are fulfilled in a way that sustains our environment. Our mission is to enable economic growth through infrastructure and energy development, and to provide solutions that protect people and preserve the planet. This clear path the company has paved led to a variety of awards for outstanding ethical conduct. In 2011 Caterpillar was named the world’s most ethical company by the Ethisphere Institute (Sawayda, J., Fairy, E., & Yepez M.). The ethical foundation of the company rests on four cornerstones found in the Worldwide Code of Conduct by which the company conducts its global operations. The below list taken from the Caterpillar website highlights each with an example of their ethical practice: * Integrity- We hold ourselves to the highest standard of integrity and ethical behavior. We tell the truth. We promise only what we can reasonably expect to deliver. We strive to keep our commitments. Our company's stockholders, customers, dealers, distributors, those with whom we do business and our fellow employees must be able to trust what we say and to believe that we will always keep our word....
