Catching Fire is an action-fiction book by Suzanne Collins. It is 391 pages long and was published by Scholastic Press © 2009.

Catching Fire begins a few months after Katniss and Peeta won the 74th Hunger Games. Katniss is recovering from the Hunger Games and getting ready for the Victory Tour, an event where the victor of the last Hunger Games tours each of the twelve districts and the Capitol, ending with their home district. Before they leave, President Snow comes to Katniss’s house. He warns her that he’s watching her and doesn’t want to see any more rebellious acts. He says that he wants her to convince everyone in Panem, including him, that when she held out the nightlock it was an act of love, not rebellion. President Snow exits the house, leaving Katniss confused and nervous. Later on, Katniss talks to Haymitch about what President Snow said. Haymitch explains that if she doesn’t want her family and Gale to die, her whole life will have to be involved with the made up love affair with Peeta. Katniss then realizes, in other words, that to protect the people she loves, she will have to marry Peeta. They then embark on the Victory Tour. Their first stop is District 11, where Rue and Thresh came from. Katniss and Peeta said too much during the ceremony so it looked like another rebellious act. An old man whistles Rue’s mockingjay song. All the people in the crowd do the respect sign from District 12, the last goodbye that Katniss gave to Rue in the arena. As they are leaving, Katniss and Peeta go back to get her flowers, and see the old man who whistled get executed. They leave quickly but hear two more shots after the door behind them closes. After that, they move on to the next districts, but are much more careful. By the end of the tour, Peeta has publicly proposed to Katniss. Katniss is still worried that people can tell they're faking it, though. She begins to think of backup plans. Then they attend a celebration in the Capitol, where Katniss meets the new Head Gamemaker, Plutarch. Plutarch shows Katniss his watch, which has a mockingjay on it. They go home and the Victory Tour ends. Katniss is walking through the mayor’s house one day to look for Madge. She goes to the mayor’s office to say hi, and finds the TV on saying, “Update on District 8”. It then has a view of the district, where the square is full of people fighting the Peacekeepers, and the Peacekeepers are shooting into the crowd. Katniss sees banners of her and the mockingjay, and realizes that it is becoming a symbol of rebellion. Katniss has a lot to process, so she arranges a private meeting with Gale. They talk about running away together, but just end up arguing. Gale wants to rebel and Katniss doesn't. He storms out, and she goes to find Peeta, who says that he'd follow her if she wants to run away. Their conversation is interrupted, though, when they find Gale being whipped in the town square as punishment for hunting game. Katniss gets in the middle of it and is injured. She sees that her friend Darius tried to do the same and is in serious trouble. Katniss gets Gale home to her mother for healing. He's barely alive, and Katniss is conflicted. She's losing her identity. She still feels caught between Gale and Peeta. Over time, she gathers herself and realizes she has to keep fighting against the Capitol; she's can't just run away. Another day, Katniss goes into the woods for some peace and quiet, but runs into some strangers who show her a cracker with a mockingjay sign. Katniss finds out that the two strangers, Twill and Bonnie, are rebels from District 8 on their way to 13. Katniss thinks that the Capitol destroyed District 13 long ago, but the others say it's been rebuilt. She sends them on their way, but can't shake the info they've given her. She tries to go home from the woods and realizes she's trapped outside by an electric fence. The Peacekeepers are trying to get her into trouble....
