Fox invest around 57 million on the acquisition of the 161 874 m² of the costs in playas del Rosarito, Baja California in México where they constructed Fox Baja studios. This was designed especially for the filming of the movie in 1996. In that studio they built a complete scale of the ship.
The main filming started on September 1996 and it last 160 days.
After it was realized in 19 of December of 1997, the movie was a complete success; It had an 83% of acceptance from the Rotten Tomatoes and a score of 74 over 100 in Metascore. It was considered at that moment as the most expensive production of the time.
In just its first day in the U.S. and Canada raised $ 8,658,814. In its first week on billboards, achieved a profit of 52.9 million USD. Finally closed with more than 600 million USD in the U.S. and Canada and more than 1.8 billion USD worldwide.
