The scope of this assignment is to complete a case study with the support of a preceptor detailing the assessment of need, communication and partnership process that occurred on visiting   a family with their first new born baby. The author is going to look at the assessment of needs of the family   and in particular breastfeeding, sudden infant death   post natal depression and smoking. The Communication process   and working in partnership with the family will also be included   in this essay.   The findings from this family   case study will be compared to the recent findings of the 1st report of Infant and their Families   “Growing up in Ireland “ the national longitudinal study of children.The author will reflect with the preceptor following the visits to the family. To conclude there will be personal reflection and implications for future practice. Throughout the assignment there will be reference to up to date national and international literature together with relevant and national and local policy).
As well as providing practical advice and support, the PHN can advise parents on accessing other sources of support such as parenting-skills classes or parent-and-baby groups. New parents can usually expect to visit, or be visited by, a PHN shortly after coming home from hospital, when the infant is three months old, at the seven- to nine-month developmental check and finally when the child is three years of age.
The visit of a PHN to a new family is important as this contact with this family will last for at least three years. The first phone call is the initial contact and may last for 1-10 minutes as the content of this call is essential in building up a rapport with the family.
