Case Analysis - Recorded Future

As the case said, Recorded Future is a big data start up that offers a predictive model software using business intelligence tools and it’s primary focus on government intelligence agencies and some private corporations.

One of the biggest problems they are facing right now is identify if growth will come from premise based (Foresite Platform) analysis of information in side organization or a web based solution (SaaS). The answer of this question will make them wondering about their actual customer segment (Government intelligence agencies).

According to research by MGI and McKinsey’s Business Technology Office1 about the future of big data in five domains: healthcare, public sector, retail, manufacturing and personal-location data globally, they highlight some projections that make us conclude that this domains will have an enormous potential as future heavy users of this solution because of the great insights they can get from their customers in order to maximize their revenues through offer creatively and efficiency solutions that will revolutionize the customer experience.

The increasing volume and detail of information captured by enterprises, the rise of multimedia, social media and the Internet of Things (IoT) will fuel exponential growth in data for the foreseeable future. The use of big data will become a key basis of competition and growth for individual firms.

On the other hand, according to Goldman Sachs study2 projects that spending on cloud computing infrastructure and platforms will grow at 30% from 2013 to 2018 compared with the 5% growth for the overall enterprise IT. In the same line, Cisco is predicting that by 2018, 59% of the total cloud workloads will be Software as a Service (Saas) workload, up from 41% in 2013.

Based on this data, I recommend to Recorded Future to strongly pursue private business corporations and focus their commercial efforts on the Saas solutions. It’s important to know that this

One of the most practical and fundamental portions of Big Data included a excerpt on an individual named Oren Etzioni. Etzioni, co-founder of one of the internet’s first search engines MetaCrawler, is responsible for “Project Hamlet,” an application that used a sample of 12,000 price observations to help customers buy the cheapest flight tickets available at a certain time and place. This ingenious idea dawned on Etzioni after booking a flight in advance expecting the ticket price to be the lowest at that point in time. Only after boarding the plane and curiously asking his fellow passengers did Etzioni come to his realization that he had not only paid more than a majority of the other passengers, but most had also purchased their tickets substantially later than he had for his. Infuriated by this newly found information Etzioni gathered large amount of data by “‘scraping’ information from a travel website over a 41-day period.” After years and years of of the system being fed more data and becoming more efficient Project Hamlet “was making the correct call 75 percent of the time and saving travelers, on average, $50 per ticket,” by the year 2012.…

When reading the article “Big data: Big hype”, written by Mark Barrenechea, I found that the main focus of the article to be on if big data is practical in industries. Right now there is a large build up of data, it’s estimated that only .5% of it being analyzed to this day. The only disadvantage to this build up of data is that people don’t know how to use all the data to their advantage. Meaning that they have lots of information that could be applied to the demand for a product, but people are not sure on how to implement them. Using data can help a company understand which of their services or product is successful with consumers, and that can be used in planning future outcomes.…
