Case 52: The Safety Training Program

Question 1. Evaluate the company’s on-the-job training program. Should it be changed? Houghton Refrigeration Company safety training program is very poorly organized. I disagree with their current process of hiring and training new employees. Houghton Refrigeration should not expect newly hired employees to learn a job within ten minutes and perform the job correctly without any prior knowledge of the product they are about to work on. Currently Houghton does not offer orientations. Houghton should offer newly hired employees an orientation where they are given a brief history of the company and the products it offers customers. Houghton should also offer training sessions during the first week of employment so employees can learn the company’s processes. Training sessions should be conducted by a member of management who is engaging and familiar with the products, safety regulations, and OSHA requirements. Training sessions should include safety material -handling techniques, safety rules and regulations, lifting procedures, and proper ways of installing products. This will allow employees to familiarize themselves with safe ways to handle the products they will be working with and give them an opportunity to ask questions. Once the employees show up for their first day they should be assigned to an experienced employee for at least two days to show and monitor the new employees work and assist if needed. The experienced employee could provide the new hire with helpful information or techniques as to how to complete the job effectively and without accidents. Given the information above I do believe Houghton Refrigeration Companies on -the-job training program should be changed to reflect the suggestions given.

Question 2. Should the company install an employee orientation program for new factory workers, or is one not necessary? Houghton Refrigeration should install an employee orientation for all new employees. Houghton should take the time to build a complete orientation or onboarding process so that all new employees will receive the proper training to complete their jobs effectively. The new onboarding process will start with building a comprehensive checklist of all tasks that must be completed before the new employee starts work, and during their first ninety days of employment. The checklist is important to ensure that all new employees receive the necessary information to transition into their new positions. Please review the Houghton Refrigeration New Employee checklist below. While Houghton does have some senior employees that have been with the company a while helping out new employees, this process needs to have a more formal definition. The use of mentors to assist new employees will help train and integrate them into the company. A mentor will help train and answer questions that the new employee might have. The final step in an orientation process is the evaluation or follow up reviews. These reviews will happen at the thirty and ninety day intervals with the new employee and the mentors. The reviews will help to ensure the new employee is fitting into the company and all safety protocols are being followed. By conducting the review with both the mentor and the new employee, management will get a complete understanding of the onboarding process and how effective or ineffective it has been for each employee.
