CASABLANCA: AN ANALYSIS ON ONE OF THE GREATEST FILMS OF ALL TIME Casablanca is the award winning 1942 film directed by Michael Curtiz. It is a romantic drama set in World War 2 and it tells the story of a man who must help the woman he is madly in love with escape from the Vichy-controlled city of Casablanca. Although the film is quite dated, the film delivers the same amount of depth and emotion that modern day films have today. Casablanca is based on the book “Everybody Comes To Rick’s” and stars Humphrey Bogart, Ingrid Bergman, and Paul Herald. Casablanca was exceptionally made and has influenced many other films such as Passage to Marseille and Play It Again, Sam. The film was also was a plot device in the science-fiction television movie Overdrawn at the Memory Bank. Casablanca is truly an A-list film and no one in 1942 could have made a better, more realistic film than Michael Curtiz did. Although he wasn’t the first choice for director of this film, Michael Curtiz (born Manó Kaminer Kertész) ended up being the perfect person to direct this film. He made this film very realistic for it’s time and although the film was all made in the studio, there is not one part of the film where I believed the actors were not actually in what ever setting they were meant to be in. Whether he added a ton of smoke in the café to add that extra depth in the scene or make Ingrid Bergman look even more beautiful than she already was, Michael Curtiz was always on his game and made every scene seem more and more realistic than the last. The main character in this film was Rick Blaine and the man to play this role was no other than the late great Humphrey Bogart. In the 1941 film High Sierra. Bogart was given the opportunity to play a character with some warmth to him and some emotion but this was the first film where he truly played a romantic character.
