The struggle young people go through trying to find a balance between responsibility and freedom in their life is displayed in Lasse Hallstorm ‘s film “what’s eating Gilbert Grape”. This film portrayed the story of a young man, Gilbert Grape who has to find a balance between responsibility and freedom in his life. The essay’s intention is to describe important internal conflict that existed in Gilbert. The verbal and visual features in the film helped me understand why the internal conflict going on in Gilbert was so important.

The film started with Gilbert and Arnie sitting by the side of the road waiting to watch the campers drive past. Gilbert said, “my bother Arnie is turning eighteen and my family is planning a big party. Some days you want Arnie to live, some days you don’t “. This verbal feature helped me understand that Gilbert is responsible for Arnie and he is unhappy with this responsibility and it is frustrating for him as he must always be there with Arnie. An example of this is when he went to deliver the groceries for Betty Carver and told Arnie to wait in the car, by the time Gilbert returned to the car Arnie was gone was climbing the water tower. This visual feature shows us that Gilbert must always have a watchful eye on Arnie at all times and because of this it is frustrating and wants freedom. The director included the water tower as a symbol of Arnie’s at risk nature and also symbolises that Arnie could go at any time.

Gilbert has too many responsibilities and not enough freedom because he is always watching Arnie and working at Lampson grocery. When Becky comes to town she offers Gilbert a taste of freedom. When she tells Gilbert to lie down and tell her what he wants. This verbal feature helps me understand that Gilbert has never been asked what he wants because he is always has responsibilities to fulfil. Gilbert is torn between the responsibilities that have been placed on him and the freedom that Becky is offering him. He is trying

Guilt. “A cognitive or emotional experience that occurs when a person believes that they have violated a moral standard and bears significant responsibility for that violation.” Guilt is portrayed a great deal in Lasse Hallström’s What’s Eating Gilbert Grape (1993). Guilt is depicted within the film through Gilbert as he is indecisive between leaving and staying, it is depicted through Bonnie as she believes that she is an incompetent wife and parent, and through Betty Carver, who holds herself responsible for the death of her husband. What’s Eating Gilbert Grape follows the trapped and tedious life of Gilbert Grape (Johnny Depp), through his struggles with responsibility when caring and providing for his family and mentally disabled brother…

The main character Mickey is represented as valuing the outcasts of society. He is at an age where identity is important to find and seeking power to prove he can fit in. The issues facing this character have values and attitudes reflecting his actions. Another essential feature of an example is showing the Mickey is trying to prove he is strong, but not tough enough to harm another person so he uses his anger to think about making an irrational decision. “I – I – I’m gonna k – k - kill it! He cried.” This example shows how Mickey is unsure of his decision. As a main character presented we as readers feel sympathy toward him because he is forced to act in a certain way that others will accept him.…

Movies are a special tool that can keep one company when they are in a moody situation. It is a contrivance that is being used almost all over the world by different types of people for a particular purpose. There are diverse film genres like comedy, action, family, musical, and romance that are being produced each year in the twenty-first century but however, the twentieth century has contributed various types of classic films such as King Kong, Annie Hall, which can never be forgotten. One of most memorable, teenage romantic films of all time would have to go to Rebel without a Cause because it tells how the present day teenage love life is like, “a romance set among teenagers seeking satisfaction outside the traditional systems, misunderstood by their parents, misunderstanding and mistrusting of their parents' values” (Tomlinson par2). A movie that includes a variety of elements deserves being…

The four aspects of choices that I have learnt about from the texts are the freedom of choice the characters had, influences, the positive and negative choices the characters made and the consequences to the choices. I will be explaining the freedom of choice the characters had from the two texts ‘On The Sidewalk Bleeding’ and ‘Do You Need Prehab?’. The influences will be explained through the text and film, ‘On the Sidewalk Bleeding’ and ‘The Blindside’. The choices made will be explained through the texts ‘On the Sidewalk Bleeding’ and ‘On the Bridge’. Teens have a reputation for disobeying the rules that are given to them. From a teen being scolded for not completing their chores, to being yelled at for promiscuous behavior. Teenagers often make impulsive decisions to justify their lifestyle. The play Romeo and Juliet by William Shakespeare involves two teenagers that end up giving up their lives, even after the many warnings given from their parents and peers. This play shows Shakespeare’s ingenious method of accurately portraying the way a teenager tends to act out against rules that limit their impulsive behavior.…

    Caring for Others

Nowadays people are more egocentric, thinking more of their own rights and benefits at the expense of others. Rude behaviors are often seen in public. To name a few, we often see some people rushing into an MTR compartment without leaving any exit space for the departing passengers, throwing garbage everywhere instead of putting it into a rubbish bin, speaking foul languages and talking to their mobile phones so loud that we are compelled to hear. All these show that they are selfish, impolite and uncivilized. If everyone does the same, quarrelling and fighting, the vicious duo, may evolve at anytime and anywhere like those incidents happened recently on buses. Could you imagine what our world would become at the end? Perhaps it becomes a war-torn place full of anger, frustration and disappointment. Would you like this kind of life?…
