Public Health Cardiovascular
The term cardiovascular disease also known as circulatory disease or heart, stroke
and vascular diseases covers all diseases and conditions of the heart and blood vessels. Congenital heart and vascular diseases constitute one of the leading causes of death in the first year of life in Australian community. I am going to present the concept of hypertension in this essay. High blood pressure or hypertension is among the top most factors associated with cardiovascular diseases. This can contribute to a number of diseases including heart attack, kidney failure or stroke, eye damage(Australian Institute of Health and Welfare,2004).
Houston,1999 states hypertension, as a condition developed as a result of high blood pressure is strongly correlated with body mass index (BMI). It is the most common medical problem seen by physicians, among the top factors associated with cardiovascular diseases. Hypertension is considered as one of the major risk factors for coronary artery disease, cerebrovascular accidents, chronic renal failure and congestive heart failure. It causes significant burdens from illness, disability and health care costs. Hypertension usually produces no symptoms, However hereditary factors, obesity, a diet high in salt, smoking and a lack of physical activity can all contribute to hypertension. Hypertension, or high blood pressure, is defined as a reading of 140/90 on three consecutive measurements at least six hours apart which is measured with the instrument called sphygmomanometer
