Cardiomyopathy also known as the “heart muscle disease” is a deterioration of the function of the myocardium. This sometimes leads to heart failure. People with this disease are often at risk of dangerous forms of irregular heartbeat and sudden cardiac death. The term cardiomyopathy generally apply’s to any disease affecting the heart. Usually it is used for severe myocardial disease leading to heart failure. Different cases of myocardial diseases can be categorized as extrinsic or intrinsic. The term extrinsic means a cardiomyopathy where the primary pathology is on the outside of the myocardium. The most common cause of an extrinsic cardiomyopathy is ischemia. Ischemia is known as poor oxygen supply of the heart muscle. An intrinsic cardiomyopathy is defined as weakness in the muscle of the heart. This is not due to an external cause. Alcoholism has been identified as a cause for some forms of dialated cardiomyopathy. In order to make a diagnosis of an intrinsic cardiomyopathy significant coronary artery disease should be ruled out first. Intrinsic cardiomyopathies consist of a variety of disease states. Each with their own causes. Many intrinsic cardiomyopathies now have identifiable external causes including drug and alcohol toxicity, certain infections including hepatitis. Cardiomyopathies can be classified as involving dialation, hypertrophy or restriction. There are different types of intrinsic cardiomyopathies such as primary types caused by genetics. Hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, arrhythmogenic right ventricular cardiomyopathy, isolated ventricular non-compaction, mitochondrial myopathy and etc. signs and symptoms of this heart disease is similar to any form of heart disease. Chest pain is most common. To detect a cardiomyopathy e.k.g abnormalities are often present, flat or inverted t waves are most common. In conclusion treatments for this depends on the type of cardiomyopathy and condition of diseases. Treatments must also include medication or...
