Capital punishment in the United States I think should not be used. Many people think that capital punishment is no different than murder. Murder is an unlawful and wrong because causing harm to another individual in a malicious manner is no different than capital punishment. There is no difference between the two because at the end they both mean the same thing causing death to a human being. Capital punishment was suspended in the United States from 1972 to 1976 primarily as a result or the Supreme Court’s decision in Furman v. Georgia. This case the court found the cases to be unconstitutional on the grounds of cruel and unusual punishment in violation of the eighth amendment to the United States Constitution. Executions resumed on January 17, 1977 when a Gary Gilmore went before a firing squad in Utah (Capital Punishment In, 2008). Some people say it is morally wrong, but is it really wrong people get praise for good deed, and punishment for the bad ones. There are people that are facing capital punishment may state that they did not commit the crime and are wrongly accused for a crime that they did not commit. Those Facing the Death Penalty there are safeguards in 1984 the UN General Assembly passed a resolution entitled Safeguards Guaranteeing Protection of the Rights for people facing death penalty which outlines standards for the application of capital punishment .The safeguards include the right to due process, appeal and imposition of capital punishment only after final judgment a competent court after legal process which gives all possible safeguards to ensure a fair trial(Human Rights and, 2003). Also the safeguards recommend a prohibition on the imposition of the death penalty on persons who committed a crime before the age of 18, pregnant women and the insane (Human Rights and, 2008).
