Assignment 2.4: Lessons from the classroom

Part One: Evaluation of my teaching practice:

I am compiling this self-evaluation report after my third teaching practice in the classroom. My teaching time lasted 40 minutes each time, and my class size varied between 15 and 16 students (ss) at a time. Classes comprised a good mixture of foreign ss, representing various European and non-European nationalities and cultures.
The feedback I received on all TP sessions emphasised on my confidence in delivering the teaching practices which was good and encouraging. The other positive element of delivering the lesson that came out of the feedback was my interaction and engagement with the students (ss). I was praised on my mannerism as a teacher, and my individual rapport with the ss.
I rated my TP and overall lesson delivery as below standard, however the general opinion amongst my peers and Tutor was that my TP was up to standards.
I started my first TP session with a clear voice projection but not loud enough for all ss to hear. However it was noted, by my peers, in my last TP session that not only my voice projection has improved and loud enough for all ss to hear, my meta-language was also improving and becoming much clearer and understandable.
An area of slight concern that had been picked upon was me being too polite when giving instructions and conducting feedback during a TP session. Although, this had being discussed once again during teacher feedback, my peers felt that I was less polite than previously, and that I was improving.
During my first TP, I moved about continuously in the classroom, going from the W/B towards the ss and back again. It was observed that these quick movements distracted the learners and had a side effect on teaching. I listened, and paid attention to my movements behaviour on the follow up sessions. The feedback I received thereafter was that the distractions had been reduced

TS8: I was keen to take advice from my mentor and other teachers to improve on this placement. I especially wanted to improve on my behaviour management and so I set myself a target every week and also reflect on what went well on the lesson and what needs to be improved. I developed a very good and professional relationship with all the teachers and support staff. I have also improved on developing a good relationship with pupils where pupils see me as a person who can trust and I care about them. Throughout the placement, I was punctual and did not miss any day and I make sure to be on time in school every day. I read school policies before I started the placement and attended all the twilight as well as inset days. I have supported the…

Throughout the module TS1301 a trainee teacher experiences a wide range of emotions that change their outlook on the way they teach. These emotions range from the sublime to almost rock bottom, and as with everything in life it is individual and at that moment be it at the top or bottom no one has experienced this feeling before. Throughout the module you are required to observe teachers in their lessons, this gives the trainee teacher a valuable insight into how things should be done, a lesson learnt during an observation was to have a concurrent activity in place for those learners who are easily bored and work quickly. Other aspects of the module include written assignments on various subjects, one of those subjects is the roles and responsibilities of the teacher, in this assignment the trainee teacher researches the vast amount of roles to be undertaken by the trainee teacher and quickly becomes an eye opener into the world of education, the sheer quantity of roles can be overwhelming to some trainees and this is closely followed by the responsibilities that go with these roles. ‘’ Traditionally the role of the teacher has been as purveyor of information’’ (Reece and walker 2003 p3) this is simply no longer the case and the trainee teacher needs to understand the needs of each individual learner, and cater for the group as individuals not as a class. By undertaking this module the trainee teacher should take some of the knowledge and adapt their lessons accordingly, always keeping the emphasis on the learners getting as much out of the session as possible. Unfortunately with emotions running so high it’s inevitable that a clash of personalities will occur at some point, when a student fails an assessment they may become angry and that anger will undoubtedly end up at the trainee teacher’s door, at this point they may even be doubting themselves but it is important that as a trainee teacher they remain calm and objective, but above all…

I received feedback that I was not asking specific questions at the end to check that the original objectives have been met. I made this change and was then observed on this session. I received a further development point as I did not utilise the feedback session by explaining why the learners’ logo had not been selected. This will help the learners to understand and use the feedback for any future documents produced. I have now adapted this for future sessions.…

By taking the VARK Learning Style Questionnaire and the Teacher Perspective Inventory (TPI) I have once again been reassured that you can always benefit from being assessed. From these assessments I have found both my areas of strength and my areas of weakness. With this information I can prepare my lesson plans to focus on my strengths and at the same time add in the areas that I need to improve on. An effective classroom teacher builds off their strengths and address their weaknesses.…
