“Teaching the Vietnam War makes one realize how the shape of a narrative determines, and is determined by, its content”. The Vietnam War was one of America’s most controversial wars. Many of its aspects are still plagued with great uncertainty. Those aspects of the Vietnam War are argued and debated about, they were argued during the time of the war and the arguing has continued. The Vietnam War was indeed a time of confusion. Why did the war start? What was the United States’ real reason for getting involved? What was the objective of the war? What were the American soldiers really fighting, or in reality, dying for? How do you explain a war to someone who has not experienced firsthand, especially if you were not around yourself? There is no real answer. You can give the facts and figures, but that leaves out the true grit of a war. The human perspective must also be given. As with any war, the Vietnam War had many perspective: the protestors, the politician, and lastly, but most importantly, the soldier (Although there are many other stories that could and should be told). Through the facts and figures and the eyes of those who were there, an individual could learn about the Vietnam War, although how many actually want to understand war is uncertain.…

Directly after the Second World War, nations everywhere were suffering from post-war dilemmas; governments were in turmoil. To many countries, the antagonist of democracy, communism, seemed like a valuable answer to end their state of turmoil. Vietnam, being one of the countries that sought for an answer, was split in half upon making a decision. America was in fear that a North Vietnam communist takeover of South Vietnam would ignite communist revolution all around Southeastern Asia, so they decided to intervene. Many civilians were led to believe that the Americans in fact had no business being in Vietnam; however, these accusations are entirely false. Therefore, the USA’s intervention in Vietnam during the 1950-60’s was justifiable as an action to protect its national and international interests from communism.…

“Ideological hatred breeds racial hatred and intolerance” (p. 297). It is from this ideology that historians have over the years realized how genocides occur within different countries. From 1975 until roughly 1979, the ideology is defined within the genocide that took place within the Portuguese colony of East Timor (p. 279). Because of this notion that, “…for more than four centuries Portugal had been the dominant, almost exclusive, external influence in East Timor” (p.281). It is also important time because the country of East Timor sought out for their independence from the Portuguese. However, in September of 1974 the neighboring country…
