TITLE: Caffeine

I. Introduction:
A. Attention Getter
B. Preview: How many of you woke up this morning and had a cup of coffee, tea, or an energy drink?
II. Body:
A. 90% of people in the world use caffeine in one form or another. In the U.S. 80% of adults consume caffeine every day (FDA.GOV) . Caffeine whether it is consumed in a food or as medicine it changes the way your brain and body work and also changes how you behave and feel. Caffeine is a central nervous system stimulant. Caffeine’s cons are: Caffeine works by stimulating the central nervous system (CNS), heart, muscles, and the centers that control blood pressure. Caffeine can raise blood pressure, but might not have this effect in people who use it all the time. Caffeine can also act like a “water pill” that increases urine flow. But again, it may not have this effect in people who use caffeine regularly. Also, drinking caffeine during moderate exercise is not likely to cause dehydration. (WEBMD) Caffeine overdose is dangerous and can kill you. FDA knows of a 19 year old college student who died after taking an overdose of caffeine tablets to stay awake. A caffeine tablet contains as much caffeine as one to three 5-ounce cups of coffee. Some Positive effects of caffeine: Increases alertness, increase metabolic rate, may reduce certain kind of hepatic cancers, Increased blood flow to smooth muscle, helps with learning and memory.

B. 71% of people are drinking coffee, 16% are drinking soft drinks and 12% are drinking tea. These three are the top sources of caffeine (WebMD).
