Opportunity/Research Analysis

Industry Analysis
The cosmetic, beauty supply, and perfume store (beauty store) industry includes about 13,000 stores with combined annual revenue of around $10 billion. Major companies include Sally Beauty Supply, Ulta, Sephora, and divisions of Limited Brands (Bath & Body Works) and L’Oreal (The Body Shop International). The industry is concentrated: the top 50 companies have almost 75 percent of industry revenue. Companies specializing in professional beauty products may restrict sales to salons and salon professionals, due to manufacturer policies. Salons may resell products to the public or use products for customer treatments. Environmental Analysis

From an economic standpoint Ohio from 2008 to 2010, national economic decline resulted in a 4.4 percent decrease in employment, which should have meant 299,000 fewer jobs in Ohio. But Ohio employment decreased by 4.8 percent, or nearly 373,000 jobs. Why? There are two reasons. First, Ohio's economy is still more concentrated in industries that lost jobs (but less so), which accounted for a loss of about 10,000 jobs (-0.1%). Second, Ohio's economic competitiveness has improved – likely through a combination of workforce development; better technology, management, access to markets; and strong government tax/finance policy – but it is still a drag on the State. If Ohio’s competitiveness had not improved, it would have meant a loss of 188,000 jobs (-2.8%) from this factor, instead of the actual loss of 64,000 jobs (-0.9%) Competitive Analysis
