Business Plan
Date: December 25, 2000

To: Partners of SSFIV Venture Capital

From: John Smith, Managing Partner

Subject: Business Proposals

SSFIV Venture Capital recently received three business plan proposals. We have some available funds, so we should put that money to use by investing in one of these three companies. Mid-Atlantic Recycling is a compost manufacturer that is using human waste sludge as its source material. Mother’s House Cleaning Service is a maid service focused on upper income homes. Finally, Marrowstone Advertising Consultants is an advertising agency for nonprofit institutions. While all three of these companies have their merits, the standout in the group is Marrowstone Advertising Consultants.

The Company

Marrowstone is a limited liability partnership founded by Curtiss Cole. Mr. Cole served as a marketing executive for the Boy Scouts of America. He also worked with the Sierra Club and the Audubon Society. These experiences give him direct, high-level experience in the field of nonprofit advertising. Mr. Cole is joined by David Danielson. Mr. Danielson also has tremendous experience in the advertising business. He worked for Ford Motor Company for 10 years and was also the chief marketing executive for the Boy Scouts of America. The company has also identified a chief financial officer and an audio-visual director.

The Market

The company plans to harness Mr. Cole’s and Mr. Danielson’s experience with the Boy Scouts and focus directly on nonprofit advertising. This is an emerging market with a huge pool of potential clients. Marrowstone will focus on three types of nonprofits.

1. Environmental

2. Youth development

3. Cultural

Environmental nonprofits consist of organizations such as the Sierra Club, Word Wildlife Fund, and the Nature Conservancy. Due to the recent green movement throughout the world, this is the fastest growing group of nonprofits. The youth development nonprofits are some of the

Addressing the funding of nonprofits in today’s environment requires creativity. Government funding cuts play a major role in a non-profits currently surviving on a safety net established with the Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009 (Senior Homes). Nonprofits also often receive state funds; with the recent economic downturn the groups receiving state support are receiving less funding and the money sent is often in the rears. As state and federal budget cuts loom, resources for nonprofits must rely on the private sector for funding and support. From 1999 to 2009 there was a 31% increase in nonprofit organizations according to the latest data (Charitable Statistics). With this increase in nonprofit organizations, there is a more competitive market for the allotted monies from both public and private resources which cause straining in the market. Organizations must think outside the box to pursue fundraising and awareness to their cause and campaign to differentiate themselves from those with similar missions in such a competitive market. Streamlining data and administrative processes are underway with many nonprofits. Not possessing the funding to develop a digital presence can also cause funding to move slowly since online marketing is a way to raise awareness and attention to potential funding sources.…

Another strategy the company plans to use and is in the process of doing is reaching out to get research money from the government and other entities to help fund the project. The company is receiving government funds shortly and plans on putting them directly into research as directed in the grant. The company is also working closely with other agencies for non-profit such as the ASPCA to raise funds for further research. In turn, the company will be donating many products for the ASPCA to use on animals they rescue. The company also wants to donate and pair with local and eventually nationwide animal shelters to help animals in need because this is the company’s top priority. To…

In the opening paragraph, Porter makes an important reference to the importance of not only a company’s position, but the position of the industry as well. He states, “A healthy industry structure should be as much a competitive concern to strategists as their company’s own position. Understanding industry structure is also essential to effective strategic positioning” (p. 80). I believe this is very relevant to the nonprofit sector especially because I believe the nonprofit industry is more connected and interdependent than for-profit companies. Strategic nonprofit leadership and management should definitely look to the positioning of the nonprofit sector in addition to individual nonprofits.…
