RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THEORY AND PRACTICE IN MANAGEMENT
Introduction
(Daft, 2006) provide the definition of management as “the attainment of organizational goals in an effective and efficient manner through planning, organizing, leading and controlling organizational resources”. Specific management theories within this model (Learning Organizations, Planning, Control and Total Quality Management) whilst all considered sound and proven theories can create challenges for managers when implementing or incorporating into practice. This can be attributed to the diverse nature of the business and the infinitely different scenarios faced by managers on a daily basis.
1. Learning Organization – (Daft & Marcic, 2009, p.26) states “the essential idea of a Learning Organization is problem solving”. Does this mean empower all employees to be great problem solvers? No. First the manager must create and communicate a vision, make information available to all, assist employees in the change process, empower employees to act, and increase their capacity to produce results they really care about (Humtech, 2011). Considered an ‘ideal state’ of business some challenges faced by managers in a Learning Organization are a lack of a pro-learning culture, empowering employees when the business is unsure of its direction and a lack of tools and guiding ideas to make sense of the situations they face (Leopard-Learning, 2011).
2. Planning – as a single function will not define the manager. A great planner will not necessarily be a great manager. Planning in regards to management is defined as “the management function concerned with defining goals for future organizational performance and deciding on the tasks and resources needed to attain them” (Daft & Marcic, 2009, p.8).
