The quote “when men are pure, laws are useless; when men are corrupt, laws are broken” means a person of goodwill honors and respects the rules, therefore, such a person don’t need rules and laws to guide his actions. He always tries to do the right thing. On the other hand, the existence of specific laws prohibiting certain behaviors will not stop a person who is unethical from violating those laws.
In the light of the above explanation I agree with the writer of the quote. Hence, in my opinion the purpose of law in a society and business is; to protect people from outside aggression or harm; to establish the rules needed for a society to live and work together; to ensure that justice has been served; to punish people who commit crimes and, to maintain law and order.
Moreover, law performs various functions in a society and business. Such as law; encourages people to do the right things; promotes goodwill in the society and businesses; ensures protection; promotes equality, and justice; maintains peace and order and, governs affairs between different nations and businesses.
However, we can also define law in the light of the above quote; laws (in a society or business) refer to the scheme of rules that are recognized or formulated by a certain community, organization or a country as the regulator of the activities of its members. There are innumerable advantages of laws present in a society and business as explained below;
* Maintains Order:
In a civilized society, the act of law making is necessary for avoiding or minimizing the likelihood of disputes and conflicts. Similarly, in a business unit laws are essential to maintain peace and order within the organization. However, if laws were non-existent in society, then there would most probably be chaos all over. This is because disputes would be forcefully solved, resulting in fights. In regards to the above mentioned quote we could say crimes would prevail if laws were disregarded.
