Business Environment
Task 1 - UNDERSTAND THE ORGANISATIONAL PURPOSES OF BUSINESSES In this essay, I will select two organisations in two different sectors. I have decided to choose one company from the public sector and another one from the private sector. The two companies I chose to discuss in this essay are the BBC and BSkyB. BBC (British Broadcasting Corporation) is the public sector company, where its main responsibility is to provide impartial public broadcasting in UK, Channel Islands and the Isle of Man. BSkyB (British Sky Broadcasting Group plc.) is the private sector company, where its paying audiences are targeted via satellite broadcasting. The reason for me choosing these two companies is that they are from two different sectors but they provide the same service to the public. Their only difference is their choice in the way they operate their respective organisations. Since they provide similar service to the public, it will be easy for the reader to understand the difference between a public sector organisation and a private sector organisation. It will also make it easier for me to be able to articulate my ideas clearly. A public sector organisation is owned by the state. This means that the state/government deals with the organisation and its ownership and sale of the organisation. The delivery of its products or services is also controlled by the government for its citizens. The British government owns BBC. Their mission statement is clearly highlighted on the BBC website and it reads, “To enrich people's lives with programmes and services that inform, educate and entertain.” This mission statement is positive and they achieve this by being “the most creative organisation in the world.” They plan to be the most creative organisation by being honest, impartial and putting the audience at the heart of BBC’s daily activities.
