1. What is the current situation of Microsoft and what are the trends in the O.S. industry?
Microsoft is the one of the world largest software maker and it has a Desktop Operating System Share of 91.9% in 2012 according to Net Market Share. Multiple other sources stated that the market share of Windows has declined under 90% in the beginning of 2011. It is a company with 90.000 employees and it has been founded in 1975 by Gill Gates and Paul Allen.
In their annual report of 2011 they the company states that their revenue grow with 12% to 69,9 billion. One of the products which Microsoft sold best last year is the operating system Windows 7, it was sold more than 400 million times.
Microsoft is going to launch Windows 8 probably this year, the beta and preview version was launched on February 29th. It has been download 1 million times on this first day. New features that will be implemented in this operating system are cloud computing, touch interfaced and they are telling us that other natural ways of interaction with technology will grow.
According to the pie chart the Mac OS is the nearest competitor of Windows, their last system came out in 2010 and is called OS Lion. They released a message just one month ago with the news that the OS Lion will be improved within a new operating system Mountain Lion, which will be released this summer. It will have new features such as free messaging between all the Apple products. Besides this they also promise to develop and improve the existing products, such as the Notes, Reminder and iCloud.
