Malaysia, like many aspiring developing countries, is undergoing a health transition that has seen the parallel decrease in communicable diseases and increase in chronic diseases due to urbanization, modernization and ageing population. Health in the Malaysian society will thus increasingly focus on emerging problems that are both chronic and infectious in nature.
It was reported in MSN on 21/12/2009 that there are 7 most talked about health issues in 2009. The seven issues are cervical cancer, diabetes, osteoporosis, obesity, dental health, AIDS and H1N1. Out of the seven issues four of them are related to food intake either directly or indirectly and the individual lifestyles. The 4 issues are diabetes, obesity, osteoporosis and dental health. In Malaysia there are currently 1.2 million people with diabetes. The risk of increasing numbers of people contract with this disease is highly dependent on the number of increasing people who are obese. Being overweight is the important factor to the increasing number of people having diabetes. Dr S. Menon said that “Diabetes can be avoided unless it is caused by genetics, but the lifestyle in the modern era makes its easier for people to contract this disease. Osteoporosis though affected majority of women, it is reported that over 50% of osteoporotic fractures will occur in Asia by year 2050. In Malaysia itself there are over one million peoples suffering from osteoporosis. Whilst, obesity is a not a disease by itself it is now a growing problem across the world. Although, the rate of obesity in our country is very rare, it is now increasing significantly especially among children. This was mainly due to inactive lifestyle and excessive calorie intake. Dental health is always thought as a minor disease, has been a big worry as Malaysians have been ignoring the importance to look after their teeth and gum which will then lead to gingivitis, cavities and gum disease.
