Communication is important to every business. Both verbal and nonverbal communication plays a major role in helping business reach its goals very effectively and efficiency, especially large organizations. The United States Navy is one of those large organizations where effective business communication is crucial for the Navy to get all its work done, including the continual, 24/7, protection of this country. This includes the almost 500,000 Navy men and women serving all over the United States and around the world. Primarily, they communicate by using email and phones. They also use fax, and other new technologies to communicate with each other. Trends in the Navy include those involving data security, teamwork, and diversity.
Business communication plays a major role in many people’s day-to- day activities. “Communication helps organizations and the people in them achieve their goals. The ability to write and speak well becomes increasingly important as you rise in an organization.” (Locker & Kienzler, 2008, p. 45). Today, communication is much faster, and significantly affects business and business communication. Email is the most commonly used form of communication in the Navy because it is the fastest type of communication. The Navy uses email for various purposes, for example; a leader will send emails to all Navy personnel regarding uniform issues or training schools. The Navy also uses conference calls if they want to get an answer fast. Text messaging is another way that Navy men and women communicate among themselves, for both work and pleasure. The Navy website is another way to post information addressed to all Navy personnel. This information can remain secure as it can only be accessed by using special encrypted card readers.
