Imagine having a teenage son that loves to snowboard and goes every weekend, but every time he goes you have to stop everything your doing and take a 45-minute drive to Afton Alps. Afton Alps should provide bus service from Woodbury to Afton in order to save gas money for skiers and snowboarders, Increase Afton Alps revenue and decrease wear and tear on the roads.
First off if Afton buys a bus it will save parents time and money because they will not have to drive a 45 minute round trip. This 45-minute drives can turn into an hour and fifty-minute journey if the parent has to drive their kid to Afton and then bring them home. If you drive a Chevy Suburban to and from Afton Alps you will have wasted $8.77 with gas prices at 2.62 a gallon (fueleconomy.gov, 2007). And they wonder why global warming is increasing so fast.
Secondly there will be less wear and tear on the two lane roads to Afton and less congestion in the parking lots and ticket lines. With one bus instead of many, many cars, the roads will need less repair and will be more safe. “On a average winter Saturday there is approximately 950 skiers and snowboarders.” said David O’Neefe, an employee at Afton Alps. When the parking lots are less crowded, there is more room for coach buses for ski teams and large groups. With all the extra space Afton could build a new and much needed chalet.
Finally Afton will have an increase in yearly revenue. Many people don’t go to Afton Alps on a weekly basis because they can’t get a ride. Now if there is a new bus people will go to Afton whenever they would like to. If people know they will always have a reliable ride to Afton they are more likely to buy a season pass.
