I had the opportunity to interview my most loved mentor, Stephanie Serur (my mom), about her experience with bullying.
The situation in which my mom was faced with, involved her and this girl named Suzette Feldman. This situation happened in middle school during the school day. What had happened was Suzette was a part of the popular group in school and she would tease my mom for little, silly reasons like wearing a bra or using eye shadow, Suzette might have got jealous and that’s where her actions came in. Suzette wrote on the chalk board in front of the class, “ Stephanie’s wearing a bra”, and she also would do things in the classroom to bother my mom. After verbally bullying my mom, Suzette began to annoyingly tap and poke my moms leg in class. Though my mom had not reacted to the teasing, she began to feel that she just couldn’t let someone else tap her and not do anything about it. Though she didn’t want to get in trouble by the teacher, she finally got to a point where she felt she just couldn’t be taunted anymore. She had all she could take from Suzette, and right in the middle of class, she pushed Suzette and was sent to the principal’s office. Luckily she didn’t get in trouble because the principle knew what a great student my mom was, so he let her off easy.
My mother’s opinion about this was that she felt Suzette bullied her because Suzette had a little bit of jealousy towards my mom. My mom wasn’t geeky but she wasn’t in the popular group either, she was just where she wanted to be, and she was friends with a lot of people who were all from different “groups”. My mom wasn’t defined by a group and that is how everyone should be.... [continues]
