A Bug's Life: Movie Review
The movie a Bug's life is a very entertaining film filled with comedy and action, about everyday life problems of insects. Specifically ants, and their relationship with the grasshopper. But if one look behind the very basic layer of the film we start to discover many symbols, imagery that can help one understand and appreciate the film a Bug's life just a little bit more. Within the film were all types of allusions, symbols, and themes that help one to connect with the film more. For example allusions to the story if Persephone, or symbols such as rain/water ,and lastly the plot theme of a quest needed to be undertaken by the protagonist. Can all be used to determine that the movie a bug life is a story about maturation, growing up and redemption/rebirth and finding one's self.

In the movie a bug's life we see the allusion to Persephone, when Flick the protagonist of the story is sent on a quest to get help from “warrior bugs” to fight of the grasshoppers . During this we Flick jump from ant island where he was safe and bright downs to the shadows below, where he then proceeds to cross a barren river and finally enter into a strange new world in the form of a bug city. This processed is similar to Persephone being sucked down to the underworld and from her sunny home ,crossing the river and into the strange new world of shadows that is the underworld. As we have learned earlier in the year a story with an allusion to Persephone is usually a story of maturation and loss of innocence. As the film proceeds we see flik mature and grow. This is evident when he did not back down he told hopper to drop princess dot, like he did the first time.

In the film a bugs life we the symbols of rain as a symbol of rebirth, cleansing and new beginnings. Around the end of the film the rain finally comes as Flick and the other ants prepare to fight hopper having already forced his subordinates to flee. This shows that rain is a symbol of new beginnings and rebirth

Fundamentally, rain is never just rain in a story. Usually, it can be used as an indication for something. At the very beginning of the book, inside the prologue, it begins with, “After dark the rain began to fall again” (1). This scene is when the man in an olive coat, who later is found out to be Claude, is seen buying a very suspicious looking poison from an old man in South Korea. The indication given here is the showing of a bad omen. The reader is given…

Demeter’s despair explained the barren, lifeless months of winter; while her joy was expressed through the fruitful, lively months of spring and summer (Persephone, Queen of the Underworld 6). In addition to representing the cycles of fertility on earth, Persephone represents lost innocence. The pomegranate’s sweet appearance represents temptation, and when she submits to that temptation, she is bound to the underworld forever (U*X*L Encyclopedia of World Mythology 825). Even though the myth is fictitious, it has proved to stand the test of time and be one of the most iconic Greek…

Would you be able to cope? That is the unspoken challenge laid down by “The Black Balloon,” a harrowing, unsentimental portrait of a middle-class Australian family whose oldest son has severe autism compounded by attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Would you find in yourself the seemingly infinite reserves of love and patience possessed by the Mollisons, the movie’s itinerant, highly stressed army family who have just moved to the suburbs of Sydney? Maybe not.…

The grasshopper and the Bell Cricket could symbolize many things. In my opinion, the grasshopper symbolizes common love and the bell cricket symbolizes rare love. “And finally, to your clouded. wounded heart, even a true bel cricket will seem like a grasshopper” (Kawabata 68) Another symbolic movement in the story is when the boy finds the grasshopper and the girl comes along to tell all of the kids that it was a bell cricket and not a grasshopper. The boy was not able to recognize the bell cricket in a world where there are so many grasshoppers. This story symbolizes that anyone can experience rare love, but that you have to be open to finding it first.…

For example, silkworms serve as a heavily symbolic concept throughout the novel. They are utilised as either a motif or metaphor depending on the context. Dormant and silent, silkworms bear an uncanny resemblance to Tom Leyton, whom of which actively shuns the outside world in favour of the cocoon-like confinement that is his home. Like the silkworms, he too emerges as a so-called ‘free butterfly’, thanks to the influence of Joseph Davidson. In addition, the life span of a moth is relatively short – no more than a week or two at most. However, they are liberating times, symbolic of freedom and profound joy, and as such are worth every living moment.…

    3. allegory – Where every aspect of a story is representative, usually symbolic, of something else, usually a larger abstract concept or important historical/geopolitical event. Lord of the Flies provides a compelling allegory of human nature, illustrating the three sides of the psyche through its sharply-defined main characters. A form of extended metaphor, in which objects, persons, and actions in a narrative, are equated with the meanings that lie outside the narrative itself. The underlying meaning has moral, social, religious, or political significance, and characters are often personifications of abstract ideas as charity, greed, or envy.…

The Secret Life of Bees novel and film versions both tell essentially the same basic story. One major theme both the film and novel represented was that imprisonment makes people feel small even when they are much stronger than originally perceived. However, the novel was a better representation of the work’s theme. Even with the fact that the imprisonment theme was presented in both versions, the novel demonstrated this theme in different ways from the film.…

Rain clearly symbolizes loss, death and tragedy in the story. This is established very quickly, as in chapter one Henry states that, "At the start of the winter came the permanent rain and with the rain came cholera ... in the end only seven thousand died of it in the army" (4). Right away, the reader should pick up on the symbolism of loss. After Henry falls in love with Catherine, the night he has to leave her to go back to the front there is fog that turns into a cold rain. As the novel progresses, rain foreshadows many other events such as the German offensive and massive Italian retreat, in which many Italian soldiers are killed. It also foreshadows the loss of Henry's own unit. The day that Henry and his men are to retreat, Bonello mentions the wine they are drinking and Aymo replies, "To-morrow maybe we drink rainwater" (191). The next day Aymo is actually killed and Henry's unit falls apart. The big example of rain foreshadowing loss occurs at the end of the story. When Henry and Catherine are at their lodge in the mountains, the night they decide to move to the town for the baby, it starts to rain. Once the baby comes, it rains and Catherine, as well as the child, die. This was clearly indicated as Catherine once said, "I'm afraid of the rain because sometimes I see me dead in it" (126). Rain is definitely one of Hemingway's most prevalent tools for foreshadowing in this story.…
