Hockey May Be Too Violent For Youth

Although ice hockey can be very entertaining to watch it can also be
extremely violent, especially for children.   Children who play sports such as ice hockey can learn important life skills such as leadership, teamwork, social skills, and building physical strength.   However, children can also result in severe injuries while playing this sport.   Although injuries can happen in any sport, ice hockey in particular is not only responsible for the numerous injuries to children but also by encouraging and teaching children to be aggressive and dominant.
The American Academy of Pediatrics classified ice hockey as a “collision sport” since the hockey players are at risk for serious injuries due to the collisions that occurs at such high speeds.   Ice hockey was placed third for the most emergency room visits related to sports and was placed fourth for most severe injury for hospitalization
for youth. (BCIRPU, CHEO, 2000)  
In ice hockey the players are able to use a tactic during the game called body
checking.   Body checking is when players use their body to knock their opponent on to
the ice or against the boards.   Although useful during the game, body checking is the
most common cause of injuries and as a result 86% of all players who are injured are
only among the age of 9-15 years old.   Concussions are very common when getting
body checked and each season, 10%-12% of hockey players in minor leagues (ages 9-
17) received head injury mostly with a concussion.   Young children especially are at risk
for their brain is still developing and severe head injuries can cause permanent learning
