‘Describe the main physical and technological resources required in the operation of a selected organisation’.

What are physical and technological resources?

Physical resources are buildings, maintenance and security of a premises.

Technological resources include the physical equipment, designs and drawings.

Physical Resources
Buildings and facilities:
 Any business needs a premise from where it can operate.
 E.g. Home, Tower block, City offices etc.
 Having your ‘offices’ near customers/suppliers can be beneficial for firms. Why?
 In some firms, the premises will be used by customers, so is set out accordingly e.g. A bank – deposit machines, withdrawals, consultation tables, cashier.

Physical Resources
For some businesses, the premises doesn’t need to be as attractive as customers may never see it. E.g.? How will these premises be designed?
 The location of the premises is important when considering the distribution network.
If it is nearer more customer, potentially a higher customer base and therefore higher profits. 

Materials and Waste
The materials needed by an organisation is dependant of the organisation type.
 For a car plant, it needs to have access to steel, paint, plastics.
 An office will require desks, chairs, computers. 

Some firms make a conscious bid to use recycled/renewable material – why would this be beneficial to some firms?

Materials and Waste
Firms must be careful about how much they waste, especially with a greater emphasis by the government and media about going
‘green’.
 Can you think of any examples that have tried to reduce waste and succeeded?
 The government run an Envirowise campaign, and offer grants in specific industries to cut waste.

Plant & Machinery
Very specific to the industry type.
 Some companies will invest into very expensive machinery.
 However some will lease the machinery instead – what’s an advantage of this?
