“EFFECTS OF A BROKEN FAMILY TO THE ACADEMIC PERFORMANCE OF SENIOR STUDENT OF NEGROS MISSION ACADEMY S.Y 2012-2013” NEGROS MISSION ACADEMY _______________________________________________________________

CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION
This chapter presents the background of the study, theoretical/conceptual framework, statement of the problem, hypotheses, significance of the study, scope and delimitation of the study, and the definition of term.

A. Background of the Study
Family is the basic unit of society.   This is the most important component of a country. A home is where a family lives. It may be alternated   to the word ‘house’ but a house is more appropriately   referring to the material structure, whereas ‘home’ refers to the intangible things that bind together the family members. It is the immeasurable love and care that keeps together the mother, father and their children. The Family is an essential factor for a human’s whole-being, everything about a man, his background, attitude, all of his achievements, his honor and dignity , relies on the structure of the family a man lives in with. A family is composed of a father a mother and their offspring, bonded by their love for each other. Broken home is a term used to describe a household, usually in reference to parenting, in which the family unit does not properly function according to accepted societal norms. This household might suffer from domestic violence, a dissolved marriage, drug abuse, or anything else that interferes with the upbringing of children. The phrase 'Broken Home' is more commonly used when either the mother or father is not part of the family due to bad circumstances, as mentioned above, which makes a child's upbringing suffer. It is less commonly used for parents who have simply split up, and are still noth in contact, and on good terms with the child. That is an archaic phrase coined by people who live in a very conventional social structure where most adults are married and few split up. Of course, in other layers of society marriage is not the norm and people don't use that term much. Many people would be puzzled by that phrase since many families begin to heal and thrive when the person who was making family life miserable has been removed from family life. Messiah (1983) said that some parents from broken homes are usually found in low status jobs. This may be because they did not have enough school preparations to equip them for high caliber jobs with which to use in supporting their families. This is common among African, American and Caribbean woman. Most broken homes enter their work place early with few skills and little or no experience. They begin parenting in poverty and are likely to remain in poverty which have an impact on the education of their children. Children whose fathers had been absent while they were ages one-five were more criminals in behavior. Father-son contact is an essential element in moral development, without it moral bankruptcy arises. The effect of broken home on the education of the child is devastating.

Do they know how to overcome those effects?

4. Are they capable of handling those problems than adults? 5. Does the school help them on overcoming those problems?
