British Petroleum: Oil Spill on the Gulf Coast
On April 20, 2010, America’s Gulf Coast experienced a great tragedy. British Petroleum’s (BP) Deepwater Horizon oilrig exploded, leaking oil and polluting the Gulf of Mexico. Eleven people lost their lives, many were injured, and unemployment rates increased. Many people were laid off and owners closed their businesses as a result of the declining number of tourists. As we watch the catastrophe of the BP Oil Spill in the Gulf of Mexico expand daily, we are left to contemplate what the ultimate destruction will look like and how it will affect our environment as well as who will take the blame for the disaster. Many people have different views of the oil spill, thus numerous questions are left unanswered.
While some people argue that the government and the Obama administration should be held responsible, it is evident that BP should be liable for all damages caused by the oil spill. It should not be the fault of the President and government for a disaster caused by a private company. The government should assist only with cleaning up the oil spill. The government is involved because the oil spill is one of the nation’s worst environmental disasters. It was BP’s responsibility to ensure that no oil was leaked into the Gulf of Mexico, not the governments. According to President Barack Obama, “BP is ultimately responsible for funding the cost of response and cleanup operations.” The government has stepped in to help resolve the oil spill as it spreads and to ensure America that the Obama Administration are willing to do everything in their power to make sure that this never happens again.
