1. What are the different forms of social media that exist today? Provide examples of different social media and their primary purposes. There are many sites that we now use as ways of talking to others. Chat, IM (instant messaging) and email are one way that we can talk to friends and family that live great distances from where you live. Blogging sites such as Wordpress and Blogger are good for being able to write down your ideas and thoughts. Social networking sites such as Facebook and Myspace are a great way to communicate with friends and family which also live great distances. Micro blogging sites such as twitter are great because you are able to tell people what you are doing in brief messages. Video sharing sites like Youtube and Hulu are great for sharing videos with friends and family. Forums are great to be able to ask a large amount of people a questions and get a variety of answers. Now we also have internet video calls where we can see people face to face without having to travel the distance to see them.

2. What are the greatest benefits of social media for individuals and society? The great benefits of social media for individuals are that we get to interact with more individuals that normally we would not see. Take for instance if one of our family members is overseas and we cannot call them because of the high phone call rates. Using social media, we are able to keep in constant contact with them and find out what is going on. With using social media in society, we are able to keep up with the vast news that is ever-changing, find the best deals anywhere for the things that we want, be able to search for more information, share our opinions on things that normally we weren’t able to due to the lack of ways to get information to others.
