Research the background of counselling and develop a 500 word report to be presented to the class.

The report needs to cover all of the following topics:

the purpose of counselling

The purpose of counselling is to help individuals, couples or families to work towards living in a way that is more satisfying, rewarding and resourceful. Including physically, mentally, spiritually and/or emotionally depending on the clients wants and/or needs.

The modern consensus as to what the purpose of counselling is, revolves around the concept of helping clients understand and resolve their individual issues or difficulties using their own resources and their own decision making processes. This includes teaching the client to explore and expand on their existing coping and problem solving skills.

how counselling has evolved

Modern counselling is a formalised and more sophisticated practise of what has existed since the time of wise women, shaman, medicine men and the philosopher or priest. Maybe even before these times human kind has sort out some form of counselling or guidance.

Counselling in the modern world has its roots in the late 19th and early 20th century, however there are some indicators that there may have been similar concepts explored earlier than this. Another notable point arising in the late 19th century is that of a possible Zeitgeit, with the collective conscience having similar ideas forming around the same time by many people.

Physician Franz Anton Mesmer explored in his practise and published works on his discovery of animal magnetism (mesmerism), from which James Braid developed Hypnotherapy. Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung are the individuals credited with the foundations of modern psychology and psychotherapy. Freud used Hypnotherapy in his early work then developed his method called Psychoanalysis, based on the concept of ego, superego, id and behaviours driven at an unconscious level.
