b) “But in Epsilons,” said Mr. Foster very justly, “we don’t need human intelligence.” For a society to function, is there work to be done where it would be better that the worker didn’t think?

I think it would be ok if we had robot workers that didn’t think and did boring jobs because they’re not human beings. There would be no problem in my mind to have programmed robots to do jobs that are not fun or enjoyable for someone to do because they are not humans with thoughts and feelings. However I do not think it is ethically right to program a person when he or she is an embryo by depriving it of oxygen, to make them stupid so they are content with any sort of work. By doing that think should be considered a crime because you are preventing a person from being an independent and free thinking individual and by doing that you are stripping that person of their freedom and that should never be acceptable. You would be, in my opinion, preventing that person from being a human and reducing them to nothing but a slave to do other people’s bidding. If you did the same thing with a robot or something that is programmed that isn’t a human life it would be fine to let them do work and not have them think. This makes me wonder why the World State didn’t make robots to do their bidding with all the technology that they have, they would save a lot of money since they wouldn’t have to produce soma for all the Epsilons. They’re ideal society would be better served because since the robots would be programmed, they might not even need rest or sleep which would allow them to work non-stop except for when they need new parts or to re-charge. This is yet another example of the inhumanity of the people of the World State and how far they’ve changed their values from the values of today’s society. Now they seem not human as they blindly accept any rules and conditions in the brave new world they have come into without question. They have given up their freedom and they are ok with the fact that some people that could have been just like them are conditioned and deprived of oxygen so they come out without much intelligence so they can perform everyday duties that no one else wants to do. Humans should never let someone decide everything for them and have to stand up for individuality and freedom. Those things are priceless and should never be given up for the sake of everyone’s ”happiness” because true happiness is only felt and appreciated after you experience sadness. This is why I think that under no circumstances should a worker not to think while doing a job.

e) Is BNW a horror story?

No I do not believe that Brave New world is a horror story even though it does shock someone reading the book because of how the people in the book and the society in the book is structured. Instead of being a horror story Brave new world is a satire as well as a utopian literature. A utopia is an imaginary society organized to create ideal conditions for human beings, eliminating hatred, pain, neglect, and all of the other evils of the world. Huxley uses this weird and different society to warn us of the dangers of giving the government control over new and powerful technologies and tells us that freedom is invaluable and should never be given up for artificial happiness. Even though the people in the World State don’t have a care in the world they’ve never experienced the ups and downs of life. Huxley exemplifies this and tries to show the extent of control that government has with this totalitarian state with the rigid control of reproduction through technological and medical intervention, including the surgical removal of ovaries, the Bokanovsky Process, and hypnopaedic conditioning. Another is the creation of complicated entertainment machines that generate both harmless leisure and the high levels of consumption and production that are the basis of...
