BP’s Code of Ethics: Our Commitment to Integrity
A company’s code of ethics is a written set of guidelines issued by an organization to its workers and management to help them conduct their actions in accordance with its primary values and ethical standards. A code of ethics is essential for the professional functioning of a business. I have chosen to analyze BP’s code of ethics. BP’s code of ethics main statement is as follows “The BP code of conduct stands for a fundamental BP commitment – to comply with all applicable legal requirements and the high ethical standards set out in this code – wherever we operate. To help us meet this commitment, the code defines what BP expects of its businesses and people regardless of location or background. It provides both guidance in key areas and references to more detailed standards, instructions and processes for further direction.” (p.3) This code of ethics is to ensure that each employee has a personal commitment to do the right thing. BP has certain expectations for those who supervise others. Those who supervise others have additional responsibilities under the code. They must: • Promote compliance and ethics by example – in other words, show by their behavior what it means to act with integrity. • Make sure that those who report to them understand the code’s requirements and have the resources to meet them. • Monitor compliance and ethics of the people they supervise.
• Use reasonable care to monitor third parties acting on behalf of BP to ensure that they work in a manner consistent with the code. • Enforce the code consistently.
• Support employees who, in good faith, raise questions or concerns. The company’s code of ethics contains 84 pages. This document is very detailed and covers just about every topic that pertains to the proper functioning of the BP business and the BP name. There are several sections addressed in this code.
