Borderline Personality Disorder is considered exceptionally hard to treat. Please explain why Borderline Personality Disorder might be so resistant to treatment.

BPD is caused by trauma or traumas in childhood that you may or may not remember. Because you were a child you were not able to process the traumas in a healthy way. You were not able to learn how to regulate your emotions or how to love and like yourself,. This wreaks havoc in your life because you don't trust people or yourself. It is a process that has to be learned but as an adult. It is difficult to treat something that caused such extreme negative emotions as a way of life.

Usually one with BPD needs to be on an antidepressant for the depression and an anti psychotic to help with the wild negative emotions. Then there are specific therapies for those with BPD. It is extremely important to know that the normal therapies don't help with BPD. One is Emotion Regulation which speaks for itself. You learn to handle your emotions that you were never able to learn. There is Cognitive Restructuring Therapy which helps change your negative thought processes and also help you to learn to like and love yourself.

Then there is EMDR therapy which is done by a therapist who specializes in that therapy. This therapy is revolutionary and not as lengthy as the others. The therapist has the skills to help you bring forth from your subconscious mind the trauma or traumas that caused the lifelong damage. In bringing these traumas into the conscious mind as an adult you are able to deal with them with your adult mind and process them in a healthy way. This is a life changing therapy.

All three are needed not just one or two of them. One never actually recovers from BDP but does learn the skills needed to live a happy and productive life. If you suffer with BPD I wish you the courage and the strength to work on getting better!
