A Profile of the Filipino as Manager

Summary

This book depicts a life defined by struggle and patience, success and accomplishment, and disappointment and tragic death. This is the story of Jimmy Ongpin, technocrat and statesman. At the Ateneo, where Jimmy spent his high school and college years, he was known to be competent, trustworthy, enthusiastic and spontaneous. "It has often been remarked that woman have a curious power of divining the characters of men"(75). This quotation from The Mystery of Edwin Drood by Charles Dickens reflects the opposite of what a typical Dickensian society is supposedly based upon. In this standard society, the plot would be based around the life of a dominant male. Although the title reflects a male name, the movement in the novel is directly related to the exploits of a particular character, Rosa Bud. Fondly called Rosebud by her peers, she is the apple of every man 's eye and the envy of every woman 's. She takes control in the plot not because she evidences forceful or masculine qualities, but because the powerful characters in Cloisterham, males, are all in love or feel a kinship to Rosebud. The power is therefore transferred into her hands as a result of her ability to influence these characters through their love and admiration for her.…

Growing up, people realize that around the time of reaching a mature state, education has affected their personal family life in one way or the other. With that being said, in his essay, “The Achievement of Desire”, Richard Rodriguez headed towards a path where he was unconsciously distancing himself from his family and becoming much more independent than he had expected. Rodriguez gives the reader a sentimental idea of the two contrary lives he had growing up, the life he had as a child, and the life he has as an educated man. He continued believing in his aspiration of how benefits of education can remarkably outweigh the past struggles of both his family and himself. Like Rodriguez, I also, in the past, found some form of solitude in my family life, and was able to partially see myself in his story of desirable triumph.…
