Though the idea of writing a book about punctuation seems rather appropriate in this culture of text-writing, the approach in which the author has taken to convey this message is to say the least, offensive.
This book, with comedic elements and a no-nonsense approach has managed to take an uninteresting topic and transform it into a bestselling book on punctuation. One would question how a book about one of the most mundane topic could gain so much attention from its readers, my response would be, “It must be a British thing” and I say this with the utmost respect for the Country, the author, and the fans of the book. However, every element that made up this book’s success –the humour as a means to entertain and the zero tolerance approach- did nothing for me.   The humour that was so brutishly conveyed by Truss throughout the book In fact left me angered than humoured.
As an aspiring writer, and English as a second language, it is people like Truss that inflict resentment upon my desire to be closer to the English language. The unusual and almost demented emotion that takes over her being when she sees signs like this: “DEAD SONS PHOTOS MAY BE RELEASED” leaves me questioning her sanity. Yes, I will admit fully that the statement in question here is an incomplete grammar, however, any sane person with a minor case of self-indulgence will most likely think about the family of the deceased and feel the most appropriate emotion: sympathy.
I am no punctuation expert or grammarian, and do welcome corrections on both ends, however if the approach suggests that of a demeaning stickler, I will rebel at all cost. What sticklers need to understand is that some of us struggle with the English language and have been teased a lot in the past, which in turn leaves a scar. So, to be approached by a deeply offended person and sternly informed that my use of ‘its’ is wrongly used in the place of ‘it is’, will surely spark a conversation that, on both sides, will be deemed...
