This material is an article by Dr Thomas Goreau, President of the Global Coral Reef Alliance, a non-profit organization for coral reef protection and sustainable management. His article’s key points were the ways in which coral reefs and fisheries can be restored. This would also mean to find alternatives to saving the coral reefs which is very much similar and can tie in to my project, which is to find alternatives to save the coral reefs.
I feel that this source is highly reliable as this is a very relevant topic to my project. Also, this article has been reported in May 2009. This shows that the source is current and it is an urgent matter to be addressed. I highly trust the speaker as he is the president of the global coral reef Alliance and he has dived longer in coral reefs than any coral scientists. He has published around 200 papers in all areas of coral reef ecology, deforestation and many other environmental issues. In 1998, he was also awarded the top award of the Society for Ecological Restoration. With much more achievements and background of Dr Thomas Goreau, I highly think that this source is reliable and useful to me at the same time. In his speech, he has also cited many references.
The writer claimed that “restoration has been almost totally ignored by policy makers and funding agencies.” This claim is useful because after coral restoration methods, few of the damaged coral reefs of the Coral Triangle have recovered. It is also useful and very relevant to my project because this is an alternative method to save coral reefs. With this, I can modify my alternatives by looking towards restoring the coral reefs instead of how I can conserve it by limiting the number of divers. Instead, we can have restoring methods such as creating habitats for more fishes which will enhance the survival of coral reefs in St. John’s Island. This will not affect the quality of water of which corals are required to live in. Therefore... [continues]
