I am writing you to ask for your help. My name is Alicia Lyons. I am a student at Georgian College and have presently just graduated from the Pre-Health Sciences program this past April. I am a mother of two wonderful children who I live my every waking minute for. I am new to Owen Sound as I have lived in Toronto for the last 13 years. I decided to move to Owen Sound two years ago so that my children could be raised in a safe and beautiful community such as this beautiful city. While in Toronto I struggled with addiction and found myself incarcerated more than once. I went down a very rough road for years, and during that time my daughter was in my mother’s custody. In 2008 I was forced to see the error of my ways as I found myself pregnant, addicted to crack and looking at penitentiary time. I made a decision that day to better myself for me and my family. I got off drugs, got clean, had my son, and got back custody of my daughter. I also paid Pardon’s Canada a substantial amount of money in order to fast track my getting a pardon in order to start college courses. I started at Georgian College by upgrading. On completion of that I applied and was accepted for Nursing for the September start date last year. I was unable to start last September because I had not yet received my pardon. I have again been accepted this year and am worried that again I will be unable to start my program. I have come very far and worked very hard Mr. Miller and I am now losing money waiting for this pardon to come through as I could already be done first year of nursing by now. An education is pricey these days sir and I am struggling to make ends meet all the while taking care of my family without any support from anyone but myself. Not having my pardon has also been a hindrance in getting my foot in the door of the field of my studies as all nursing homes require a police background check.
