What is meant by Blood Diamonds (or conflict diamond)? How, as portrayed in the video, does it impact on political, economic and ethical stability? It is sad to witness the abuse and unfair treatments of the poor people in countries such as Africa have to undergo in order to make some money. Also it is sad to know that after all that hard work these people put into what they do, these diamonds are smuggled and used to fund illegitimate activities. The Blood Diamond conflict has had serious impacts on the political, economic and ethical areas. In the political area, the mining and trade of diamonds fuels deadly conflicts. For more than a decade, the ongoing civil war between the Sierra Leone government and the Liberia- backed rebel Revolutionary United Front (RUF) has harmed the country. In 2000, the United Nations Security Council enforced an 18 month ban on diamond exports from Sierra Leone, since these diamonds have been fueling the conflict. The RUF has been mining and selling diamonds in order to fund illicit activities such as weapon purchase and human rights abuses. What is the Kimberly Process? Before the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme, when diamonds were imported to a country, they only carried a certificate which stated where the diamond was imported from. With the Kimberly Process Certification Scheme the certification contains more specific information including the legal origin of a diamond. The Kimberly Process aims to develop a diamond certification scheme to prevent the flow of conflict diamonds. Before this, a diamond could be a “blood diamond” and the importer did not know this information since before it arrived to the final destination it could have been moved around in different countries or continents.
