Black Is…?
To African-Americans the word black is empowering, but to some others the word sends another signal. There are racists sprinkled throughout the American society, as well as, people that consider African-Americans a threat. The word black is a misunderstood or blurred word, to the ignorant percentage of our society. Some see it as a word that strikes an automatic stereotype in their head. It makes no sense that a person is automatically classified by their skin color, and that color sets the stage for their attitudes, behaviors, and way of thinking. Especially with a word that means much more than drive-by shootings, guns, drugs, and other illegal behaviors and actions.
The term black describes a demeanor of an African-American. Though that use of the word makes it seem prejudice, but it’s a higher definition in a way. Although the case is different at Answers.com their explanation of the word is, “Being of the color black, producing or reflecting comparatively little light and having no predominant hue.” It’s changed and reformed itself in the eyes of many. As in the word gay in the 1950’s it would mean happy, but now it’s recognized as a stand-in word for homosexual. The word had twisted itself to breakaway to define a person in a more descriptive and informative light; instead of the basic definition that covers skin tone. Though when you look at it that way, it shows that the mind frames of people are evolving to reach new heights, and that is key to building a better world.
