Poems of Ted Hughes
Fulbright Scholars
Where was it, in the Strand? A display
Of news items, in photographs.
For some reason I noticed it.
A picture of that year’s intake
Of Fulbright Scholars. Just arriving Or arrived. Or some of them.
Were you among them? I studied it.
Not too minutely, wondering
Which of them I might meet.
I remember that thought. Not
Your face. No doubt I scanned particularly
The girls. Maybe I noticed you.
Maybe I weighed you up, feeling unlikely.
Noted your long hair, loose waves Your Veronica Lake bang. Not what it hid.
It would appear blond. And your grin.
Your exaggerated American
Grin for the cameras, the judges, the strangers, the frighteners.
Then I forgot. Yet I remember
The picture: the Fulbright Scholars.
With their luggage? It seems unlikely.
Could they have come as a team? I was walking
Sore-footed, under hot sun, hot pavements.
Was it then I bought a peach? That’s as I remember
From a stall near Charing Cross Station.
It was the first fresh peach I had ever tasted.
I could hardly believe how delicious.
At twenty-five I was dumbfounded afresh
By my ignorance of the simplest things.

The Shot
Your worship needed a god.
Where it lacked one, it found one.
Ordinary jocks became gods –
Deified by your infatuation
That seemed to have been designed at birth for a god.
It was a god-seeker. A god-finder.
Your Daddy had been aiming you at God
When his death touched the trigger.
In that flash
You saw your whole life. You richocheted
The length of your Alpha career
With the fury
Of a high-velocity bullet
That cannot shed one foot-pound
Of kinetic energy. The elect
More or less died on impact –
They were too mortal to take it. They were mind-stuff,
Provisional, speculative, mere auras.
Sound-barrier events along your flightpath.
But inside your sob-sodden Kleenex
And your Saturday night panics,
Under your hair done this way and that way,
Behind what looked like rebounds
And the cascade of cries diminuendo,
You

Was the development of gender inequality natural or was it created by early humans? That is a question that scholars studying global history are still asking today. Although gender in global history has been explored recently, it is clear that woman’s political and social status was usually inferior in most literate civilization of the classical period as we know from Hughes essay. But the question is, was gender inequality a natural occurrence or was it developed in early literate civilizations? That is a question that even prominent scholars cannot answer.…

Many leaders in today’s society possess characteristics that determine how they are either chosen or self-made. These characteristics could range from being a charismatic, transformational, motivational, or influential leader. Each has its own meaning, but it is possible for leaders to possess more than one characteristic. Being a charismatic leader consists of having a charming and colorful personality. As the text reads, “In the study of leadership, charisma is a special quality of leaders whose purposes, powers, and extraordinary determination differentiate them from others."…

Langston Hughes has been recalled as one of America’s greatest poets. He wrote a plethora of novels, short stories, plays, poems, and was also engaged in jazz music, noting that it highly influenced his writing. Hughes is well-known for his perceptive portrayals of African American life in the nation from the twenties up to the sixties, greatly contributing to the Harlem Renaissance of the 1920s. My personal connection to Hughes is that we both have a great interest in writing, poetry in particular.…

The Harlem Renaissance can be considered as “the cultural boom” in African-American history. Spanning from the 1920s into the mid-1930s, the Harlem Renaissance was an apex in African-American intellectualism. The period is also recognized as the “New Negro Movement”—named after the 1925 anthology by Alain Locke. Alain LeRoy Locke was an American educator, writer, and philosopher, who most consider as the father of the Harlem Renaissance. Historians recall him as a leader and chief interpreter of the movement. In his anthology, he brings out a montage of works by many well-known Africans and African-Americans…

This is a poem by Langston Hughes. James Mercer Langston Hughes was born in February 1,1902 by parents of mixed race; he attended Columbia University but was later kicked out because of racial prejudice. He left that his passion was not in school but in the neighborhood. He did random jobs until he became a “new negro poet”, Hughes was important in the Harlem Renaissance for his fight for African American equality. White supremacy was spreading widely in the country; people of mixed race were highly discriminated against. Through his poems, he spoke about patience and perseverance and tried to show that black people weren’t any less important and that they were beautiful. Through his poetry, he used themes that fought against social injustice. Hughes uses both imaginary and symbolism in his poetry.…

I backed away from the gun, clicking the safety back on to take a second of reassurance. Remembering what my dad had told me I took a deep breath and finally took the second shot. Seeing the little ole spike hitting the ground like a ton of bricks, I knew he was not going to make his “Great…
