The current world population of humans is 6,881,333,374. This is the latest data collected by the United States Census Bureau. Humans have been in growing in numbers since the time of the plague which was in the year 1400. (world population clock)
Humans have been reproducing at extraordinary rates. Throughout the 1960’s and 1970’s we have seen the highest rates of population growth. The highest single growth rate was in 1963. The rate was 2.2%. Since then the population growth rate has slowed down to 1.1% each year. A 1.1% growth rate equals about 140 million babies being born each year. The highest birth rates were recorded in the 1990’s. At this time in our history there were approximately 175 million babies being born a year. This is a number that is expected my many scientists to remain constant for the foreseeable future. The world’s death rate is currently 57 million people a year and is expected to go to about 90 million by the year 2050. With this expected death rate we will still see a big rise in human population. We would need our death rate to go up considerably in order to see our population remain at about the same number it is currently at. The world population is estimated to be around 9-10.5 billion by the year 2050 (Boughey 2).
Asia, the world’s largest continent is responsible for approximately 63% of the world’s population. Asia is the home for 3 billon people. Together India and China contain 41% of the planets human population. Africa is next on the list with 13%. Europe contains 730 million people, which is 11% and North America has 514 million. North America has 8% of the world’s population and south America and Australia have a combined 382 million people. This is 5.6% of the planets population (Campbell 2).
In the year 1804 the world’s population hit the billion mark, 2 billion in 1927, 3 billion in 1960, 4 billion in 1974, 5 billion in 1987 and 6 billion in 1999. Scientists believe we are going to hit the 7 billion mark in late next... [continues]
