eXECUTIVE SUMMARY:-

While adverse impacts of the dam across Lokmata and Sadmata can be taken care of, the availability of freshwater on the other hand reduces environmental degradation. The socio-economic impact of the dam i.e. displacement of residents and revenues earned when the dam goes online outstrips the demand for not increasing the dam height .As the minister goes ahead with new plan, the locals (affected communities, priest) have their worries allayed and compensated by an adequate package. The assurance of relocating the temple nearer to their settlement area pacifies the religious sentiments already aggravated due to acquisition of their ancestral land.

case analysis:

At the time of independence of India in 1947, the leaders of India emphasized upon the alleviation of poverty and all round economic development of the country. With this aim were launched the 5 year plan with emphasis on increase in agriculture production, setting up of heavy industries etc. It is against this backdrop that the development of this case assumes significant proportions.

In the erstwhile Bombay province a dam across the rivers of Lokmata and Sadmata was proposed to be constructed. The dam had the potential to irrigate 92000 acres of land (direct irrigation to 19300 acres & indirect irrigation to 73600 acres) in 3 districts and would store 4700 million cu. Ft of water. The irrigation project would alone yield 15.83 lakhs of revenue annually and the returns being projected at 4.37%. This would envisage a production cost of 1.7 crores.
