Bharat Ratna for Sachin Tendulkar and CNR Rao
Bharat Ratna for Sachin Tendulkar and CNR Rao

Bharat Ratna is the highest civilian award in the Republic of India. Until 2011, the official criteria to award Bharat Ratna was “for highest degrees of national service”, including artistic, literary and scientific achievements as well as “recognition of public service of highest order”. In December 2011, the Government of India modified the criteria as “for performance of highest order in any field of human endeavour” to allow sportspersons to receive the award.

On November 16, 2013, cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar and eminent scientist Prof. CNR Rao were chosen for Bharat Ratna. It was announced on the day when Sachin bid an emotional adieu to his glorious career after playing record 200 test matches. Sachin is the first sportsperson and also the youngest dignitary to be bestowed with the honour. Sachin was the most successful batsman in international cricket amassing 15,921 runs in 200 test matches and 18,426 runs in 463 ODIs. The award is a perfect send-off gift to Sachin whose career spanned 24 years making him an inspiration for generations of cricketers.

Chintamani Nagesa Ramachandra Rao, currently head of the Scientific Advisory Council to PM Manmohan Singh, is the third scientist, after C.V. Raman and the former President A.P.J Abdul Kalam, to be awarded Bharat Ratna. Prof. Rao is a renowned international authority in the Solid State and Material Chemistry. With honorary doctorates from 60 universities from around the world, he is credited for publishing 1400 research papers and 45 books. Mr. Rao is the only scientist and among handful in the world with close to 50,000 citation. Mr,. Rao was also honoured with China top science award for his contribution in boosting Indo-China scientific cooperation in January 2013. ‘Transition Metal Oxides’, Understanding Chemistry, Climbing the Limitless Ladder and “Nan crystals: Synthesis, Properties and Applications’ are some noted books by Prof. CNR Rao.

It is important to read and discuss Mukherjee's "A Wife's Story" as an integral part of twentieth-century American literature and not as an "exotic" short story by a foreign writer. As the essay accompanying "A Wife's Story" points out, Mukherjee identifies herself very strongly as an American writer writing about twentieth-century Americans. Although most of her stories are about South Asian-Americans (South Asia in the contemporary geopolitical arena usually consists of Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Maldive Islands), she sees herself as being primarily influenced by, as well as being part of, the tradition of Euro-American writers. In a brief interview published in the November, 1993 issue of San Francisco Focus in which she discusses her novel, The Holder of the World (published in 1993 after the publication of the second edition of The Heath Anthology), she says, "I think of myself as an American writer . . . I want to focus on the making of the American mind." But instead of an exploration of the making of the American mind, The Holder of the World is a reflection and an echoing of the existing, dominant American attitudes and concepts about the American colonial period and the "exotic" India of the past with self-indulgent emperors and rajas, wealthy merchants and self-sacrificing women.…

Governments, charity organisations and prominent individuals have been inspired by her work. She received numerous awards, including a number from the Indian Government, one of which was the Bharat Ratna (1980), as well as international awards, such as the Nobel Peace Prize in 1979. She has not been without her critics, however, including prominent atheist Christopher Hitchens, cultural critic Michael Parenti, Indian-English physician Aroup Chatterjee and the World Hindu Council (Vishva Hindu Parishad). They accuse her of proselytizing, strongly opposing contraception and abortion, believing in poverty's spiritual goodness and alleged 'secretbaptisms of the dying'.[citation needed]…
