Bewulf is a great and old poem that was written long time ago. This poem is about a great warrior who has traits that not in other warrior. It is about a brave man who fights arrogance and work hard to help people. The poem deals with different themes and I here, I will concentrate on the themes of: revenge, loyalty, and a good king and a good warrior.
Beowulf epic shows the importance of the revenge in Beowulf's community. During that time, killing people was a matter of fact, so the tribe or the relatives of the killed will do every thing to avenge the killed and themselves. "The relationship between kinsmen was also of deep significance to this society. If one of his kinsmen had been slain, a man had a moral obligation either to kill the slayer or to exact the payment (man-price) in compensation."(1). The author highlights the importance of kinsmen ship and revenge in Beowulf's society that whenever a man is killed, his relatives have to avenge him by killing the slayer or by taking a sum of money as a compensation for his death. This quality is obvious in every society, and I see it in our society where tribalism is the dominant, in addition to that, whenever the tribe or kinsmen fail to avenge their slayer or to take money for compensation they will feel shy and shame of their selves. In the poem of bewulf, the vengeance played an important role with some characters. Firstly, Grindel wanted vengeance, and to kill people for he was cursed and lived a bad and ugly life. Also because people were happy in their lives, he felt jealousy and started killing them to feel satisfied. He was exited destroying the hall because it resembles all what he hate about humane; their life and happiness. Secondly, Beowulf heard about that monster which violated king hrothgar's hall and killed his people cruelly, and managed to go and fight that monster to pay the king back of his favor, and to kill that monster that killed the people which Beowulf regarded them his kinsmen as humans. Thirdly, when Grindel was killed by Beowulf, his mother wanted to avenge her dead son. Not only humane wanted to take revenge, but also monsters. Greindel's mother looked for revenge, and attacked Beowulf and the people in similar way of what her son used to do. She wanted to kill bewulf in the first class because he was the on who murdered her son. Finally, revenge has played an important role in the poem. (2) Another theme is see in the epic is: Loyalty. A good warrior or leader must have certain qualities including loyalty. "As described in the story, Beowulf is fiercely loyal; he has allegiance with all that are not enemies"(3). Beowulf in addition to all his good manners, he was a loyal warrior. Here in the poem, there are several occasions that resemble loyalty. At the beginning, Beowulf managed to go to the Danes. I thought that he was interesting in rising his own fame and in getting more reward for himself, but then, it was clear that the reason of going there was he and his king owe the Danes king old favor. For bewulf, going there for not money and reputation, was the reason why the Danes regarded him as a great warrior who doesn’t care about materials. By helping the Danes, Beowulf achieved two things of loyalty; the first was return the king favor, and the second was representing his king in Danes land. Then when Beowulf returned to his home land, he served his king loyalty without no greed in being the king of his country. When the king died, Beowulf felt sorry about him and refused to be the king although the queen asked him to be, because her son is still young for being king. However, he stayed a warrior rather than a king and served the young king loyalty. Loyalty also was seen in the poem when bewulf decided to face the dragon on his own without any one's help, and chose eleven strong warrior just in case of emergency. In the battle, the dragon was stronger and it seemed than it will defeat Bewulf. When his soldiers saw this,...
